Cue The Victory Fanfare, As Final Fantasy Franchise Surpasses 200 Million Copies Sold

Square Enix has celebrated a remarkable shattering of sales records for the Final Fantasy franchise, reaching over 200 million copies sold globally. This impressive feat seems to align with the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series also crossing the 5 million mark in sales.

On the official social media platform X, the Final Fantasy team proudly announced a remarkable milestone for the series, equivalent to the size of Ifrit. In their post, they expressed gratitude to players for joining them on their epic journeys throughout the years. The Role-Playing Game (RPG) franchise was initiated in 1987 with the debut of Final Fantasy, and the latest mainline installment, Final Fantasy XVI, came out in 2023. Last year brought about the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which later became available on PC at the start of this year. Interestingly, the Steam version of the game featuring Cloud Strife and company set a series record for concurrent players. The PC launch has also boosted Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s sales, making it one of the top-selling games in 2025. This is an interesting turn of events following Square Enix’s announcement in September that both Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy XVI did not meet their projected sales targets.

The global sales of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection surpassed 5 million units, while the entire Final Fantasy series has reached an astounding 200 million copies sold worldwide! No matter where your journey with us began, we appreciate your company.

The series known as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, featuring the initial six mainline games in the franchise, debuted on computers and mobile devices in 2021. Later, Square Enix made this remastered collection available on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in April 2023. An appearance on Xbox Series X|S is scheduled for 2024. Interestingly, Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO, also became accessible on Xbox Series X|S last year. The popularity of this game has prompted Square Enix to commit to bringing more of their games to Xbox.

The achievement of Final Fantasy selling 200 million copies places it among a select group of games, as even giants like Resident Evil (with 176 million) and Monster Hunter (at 108 million) trail behind. Call of Duty, however, stands on a different level with its FPS series surpassing the 500-million mark. Notably, Pokemon has also reached impressive heights, selling 99 million units just on the Nintendo Switch platform.
