Crypto Heists: Melbourne’s Crime Syndicate Gets a Reality Check! 💥

Police have just pulled the rug out from under a Melbourne crime syndicate that thought they were the kings of crypto ATM heists. Spoiler alert: they weren’t. 🚔💰

So, picture this: a bunch of wannabe criminals in Melbourne thought they could just waltz into crypto ATMs and collectible card stores like they owned the place. Well, surprise! The North West Metro Regional Crime Squad had other plans. They made four arrests last week, and let’s just say, the criminals are now on a first-name basis with the inside of a jail cell. 🏴‍☠️

This organized gang was busy stealing cryptocurrency ATMs and raiding collectible card stores since January. Hoppers Crossing, Bentleigh, Brunswick, Werribee, and Vermont were all on their hit list. And don’t even get me started on the three collector card stores in Epping, Moonee Ponds, and Eumemmerring. They probably thought they were just playing a game of Monopoly, but the police had the Get Out of Jail Free card. 🎲

Police Seize Stolen Goods, Including Crypto ATM and Firearms in Melbourne Raids

Now, the detectives believe these thieves were cruising around in stolen cars like they were in a Fast & Furious movie. 🚗💨 They collected a treasure trove of stolen items, including trading cards worth about $50,000. Yes, you heard that right! We’re talking Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, NBA, and Magic the Gathering. Who knew crime could be so… nerdy? 😏

In December 2024, the Australian authorities decided enough was enough and created a special task force to tackle cryptocurrency anti-money laundering violations. AUSTRAC is leading the charge, focusing on those sneaky crypto ATM activities. Because, you know, nothing says “I’m a criminal” like stealing digital money. 💻💸

Police executed search warrants in Reservoir, Coburg North, Greensborough, and South Morang. They apprehended four suspects, including a 37-year-old from Reservoir and a 32-year-old from Epping. I mean, if you’re going to be a criminal, at least pick a cooler name, right? 😅

The 37-year-old is facing a buffet of charges, including burglary with firearm possession. He’ll be gracing the court on May 2. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old is set for his court date on February 21 for burglary, theft, and drug possession. Talk about a full plate! 🍽️

Two other suspects, aged 33 and 46, were arrested but got released faster than you can say “crime doesn’t pay.” The authorities are asking anyone with info on drug or firearm trafficking to contact Crime Stoppers. Because, you know, snitches get stitches, but they also get rewards. 💰

Detective Inspector Patrick Watkinson gave a shout-out to the operation’s success and the trading card enthusiasts who helped out. He’s all about dismantling organized crime syndicates in Melbourne. So, if you’re thinking of a life of crime, maybe consider a career in knitting instead. 🧶
