Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are preparing to launch a new cinema release for one of anime’s most profitable franchises. Today, at the Annecy Animation Festival, they announced that they have obtained certain rights for distribution in various countries outside the U.S. This summer, the movie titled “Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie” will be shown in cinemas worldwide.
The newly launched Japanese film, earning 200,000 yen ($1.3 million) within its initial three days, delves back into the popular “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” storyline. It focuses on Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto’s youth, their student and sorcerer years. This revised edition features enhanced sound effects and is marketed as a cinematic recap after the conclusion of the anime’s second season in 2023.
In certain regions such as Europe, Latin America, and Australia, Crunchyroll and Sony are set to release the movie. Both subtitled and dubbed versions of the film will be made available for viewing.
In recent years, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has emerged as one of the most impactful anime series. It first appeared in 2020 and swiftly gained massive popularity for studio MAPPA and publisher Shueisha. The franchise’s standalone movie, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” earned over $188 million globally and ranks among the highest-grossing anime films ever. However, unlike that film, this one is more of a compilation.
In this upcoming movie, we delve into the backstory that sets the stage for the franchise’s primary plot, taking us back to 2006. Viewers will experience the series’ key characters, Gojo and Geto, who were once close but eventually became adversaries, as they face a pivotal event – the mission to safeguard and ultimately destroy the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai. This mission serves as the catalyst for their philosophical disagreement.
Crunchyroll persistently establishes its niche within the realm of anime cinema. With Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex Inc. as its backbone, this streamer-distributor has been instrumental in disseminating anime to a global fanbase. Its cinematic division has contributed to the success of ten of the top 20 highest-grossing anime films at the U.S. box office, featuring titles such as “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” “Suzume,” and “One Piece Film: Red.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Concealed Arsenal / Untimely Demise – The Film” – This movie marks the initial release from the franchise following the end of Season 2 and aims to refresh the memories of devoted followers while also welcoming fresh viewers into the series.
