“Cruel Intentions‘” long road to TV has ended rather cruelly.
I’ve got some disappointing news to share: I’ve exclusively learned that the “Cruel Intentions” TV series on Amazon Prime Video has been unfortunately axed after its first season. This show made its premiere back in November 2024, serving as a modern take on the original film from 1999, which was itself an adaptation of the timeless novel “Dangerous Liaisons.
In 2021, a television series adapting from the movie debuted on IMDb TV (also known as Freevee), and it wasn’t until late 2023 that it was officially commissioned for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
As a discerning film aficionado, I had the pleasure of witnessing an engaging cast in this Amazon series. Among them were Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson – each bringing their unique talents to the screen and contributing significantly to the overall experience.
Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher took on dual roles as co-creators, scriptwriters, and top executives. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty from Original Film also held executive producer positions, with Roger Kumble contributing as well. Notably, Moritz was responsible for the original film’s production, which he developed in collaboration with Kumble, who wrote and directed it. Bruce Mellon, alongside Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi of Iervolino & Bacardi Entertainment, were also involved as producers. The production of this series was a joint effort between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film.
The show centers around the students at Manchester College, a prestigious university located near Washington D.C., where status and reputation are paramount, with fraternities and sororities being highly respected. Two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil (Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Burgess), will go to great lengths to maintain their position at the top of the competitive social ladder. A hazing incident could potentially destabilize the entire Greek Life system, so they’ll stop at nothing to protect their power and prestige – including pursuing Annie Grover (Smith), the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Relationships will be strained, trust will be questioned, and hidden truths will surface in this contemporary royal court known as Manchester College.
Amazon usually doesn’t disclose viewership details for their shows, making it challenging to determine the exact number of viewers for “Cruel Intentions.” Despite this, the show didn’t manage to get on Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming list and didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it had a 24% approval rating from critics with a total of 10 reviews considered.
Before the current version of the show, NBC had commissioned a pilot for a series based on the movie in 2016, with Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the original stars, set to reprise her character Kathryn Merteuil. Unfortunately, this didn’t lead to a full series. Earlier, Fox had attempted a “Cruel Intentions” prequel series, but it was canceled before airing. The show’s first three episodes were later combined to create the direct-to-video film “Cruel Intentions 2” in 2001. Sony Pictures then produced another direct-to-video sequel, “Cruel Intentions 3,” in 2004.
