Criterion Collection’s Mobile Closet Comes to Los Angeles

The Criterion Mobile Closet is making yet another stop on its nationwide road trip.

After being showcased at SXSW and Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall during the 62nd New York Film Festival, the Mobile Closet van is making its way to Los Angeles. Movie enthusiasts can visit Vidiots from April 26-27 between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., and it will also be present at the Aero Theatre from June 6-7 during the same hours, as part of American Cinematheque’s “Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair” lineup.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve always been thrilled by the prospect of visiting the Criterion Mobile Closet. In the past, it’s been a magnet for fellow film enthusiasts, who’d patiently queue for hours just to step into this hallowed ground. At the New York Film Festival, we were given an exclusive opportunity to savor this moment. We could select our favorite Blu-rays at a whopping 40% discount! To sweeten the deal, we also received a complimentary Polaroid snapshot and a trendy Criterion tote bag. It was an unforgettable experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been fortunate enough to delve into the rich treasure trove of over a thousand movies from the esteemed Criterion Collection – a veritable cinematic heaven! Not only do I get to immerse myself in these masterpieces, but I also have the privilege of engaging with filmmakers and stars who grace our exclusive space, known as the Criterion Closet.

Recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to host some exceptional talents such as Rosanna Arquette, Bowen Yang, Mark Rylance, Kevin Bacon, and Carrie Coon. These encounters often occur when they are promoting their latest films or shows. It’s a unique experience to share the screen with these cinematic luminaries, discussing their favorite films and the art of storytelling through film.

In the journey westward by Criterion, Vidiots plans to screen “Bound” with Lilly Wachowski present for a Q&A, along with the classic films “8 1/2” by Federico Fellini and “The Beaches of Agnès” by Agnès Varda. The American Cinematheque’s program for June 6-7 will be unveiled at a future date.
