The renowned soccer star, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be part of the cast for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, appearing as a playable character in an exciting overhaul for this much-loved fighting game series.
Recently, fighting video games have been taking daring steps forward, and the recent endeavor by SNK has caught not only the attention of gamers, but also athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
Come September 2024, SNK unveiled an intriguing teaser trailer hinting at Portuguese football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo’s participation in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Many fans speculated he might just lend his star power as a celebrity endorser… but boy, were we wrong! It turns out, CR7 had something far more exciting up his sleeve.
Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first athlete in a mainline 2D fighting game
On March 25, 2025, it was publicly declared that Ronaldo will be integrated into South Town’s cast as a playable character, boasting his unique set of special moves – an exciting development for the esteemed fighting game series and a groundbreaking first for any significant fighting game franchise (excluding Lebron’s guest appearance in the now-discontinued Multiversus).
As a gaming enthusiast, stepping into the arena alongside a real-life superstar like Ronaldo in a 2D mainline fighting game is virtually unimaginable. Yet, considering his astronomical fame and charisma, it seems entirely fitting that he’d be among the pioneers to do so.
In the upcoming game’s vibrant preview, we see Ronaldo engaging in thrilling matches against diverse characters, each featuring unique soccer-inspired abilities. After securing a victory, he emits his famous “Siuuu!” cheer.
The unexpected disclosure left a stir in the community of fighting games; someone even commented on YouTube, “I wouldn’t have imagined that one could say, ‘I play Cristiano Ronaldo in Fatal Fury,’ which turns out to be true now.
“This is like seeing Obama being a playable character in BazBlue,” another joked.
In recent times, Fatal Fury has joined the ranks of popular fighting games that have experienced surprising collaborations. For example, Guilty Gear introduced its first-ever guest character, Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Street Fighter 6 recently teamed up with Fatal Fury characters like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui following almost two decades since their last significant collaboration.
It appears that developers specializing in fighting games are expanding their horizons significantly, as the genre experiences a surge that many gamers refer to as its “peak” or “golden period.
