Criminal Minds Star A.J. Cook Reveals Emotional Reunion with Matthew Gray Gubler!

More recently, we’ve been thrilled to witness the comeback of Matthew Gray Gubler reprising his role as Dr. Spencer Reid. A.J. Cook, our beloved JJ in the show, shared her experience working alongside Gubler once again after such a long gap.

In a recent interview, Cook shared that she contacted someone important in a crucial scene, which has recently been broadcasted. “I simply said over the phone, ‘Hey, this is what’s going on. It would feel really odd if Spencer wasn’t present.’ And he responded, ‘Of course, I’ll be there,'” she disclosed.

Previously, Criminal Minds: Evolution mentioned that Dr. Reid was on sabbatical and had a special assignment, causing his absence. However, following this period, Dr. Reid attended LaMontagne’s funeral, a situation that occurred in Season 3, Episode 3 titled “Time to Say Goodbye,” which was broadcasted on May 22, stirring feelings of grief among the team.

Working with Gubler once more on set felt as natural as ever for Cook, even though Gubler had been absent from the latest seasons of Criminal Minds. “It was just like getting back on a bike,” Cook commented when asked about any acting rust. Having him there felt like coming home. “I’m overjoyed that he chose to join us again and I cherished every moment we shared on set.

Gubler gained recognition for his portrayal of Dr. Spencer Reid in the popular crime drama series, which aired over 300 episodes on CBS. The show became a massive success and concluded after its fifteenth season in 2020; however, it was later revived as Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+ in 2022. Earlier this year, news of the series’ cancellation surfaced.

Could Matthew Gray Gubler Return for More Criminal Minds: Evolution?

In the latest episode of the show that featured Gubler’s emotional return to his character, there’s uncertainty about whether we’ll see Spencer again in upcoming episodes. He appears eager to rejoin the series if the plot requires it and is intriguing, but potential scheduling issues might prevent him from having a larger part moving forward.

Presently, there’s a new show titled “Gubler” in the works for CBS. This series is a reimagining of a successful German police drama. In this show, Gubler will portray Albert Einstein’s great-grandson. Unfortunately, the release of this series has been postponed until the 2026-2027 television season. As a result, Gubler is expected to be occupied with the new project for some time and may struggle to fit in more appearances on “Criminal Minds: Evolution”.

Criminal Minds: Evolution is now streaming on Paramount+.
