In the third season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, episode 9, there was a particularly peculiar scene that stands out vividly in my memory, hinting strongly at The Disciple’s true identity. This episode saw the Sicarius network executing its final plan, Project Checkmate, which involved clearing up any remaining loose ends and implementing a scorched earth policy.
In a scorched earth approach, all Sicarius network assassins and any remaining victims are targeted for destruction, effectively cutting off any BAU lead for dismantling the network. The cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution expanded with the debut of a new, unidentified serial killer known as The Engineer, who seems to be closing in on The Disciple for their ultimate confrontation.
In the ninth episode of season 3 for “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” it was concluded that Dr. Ochoa and Voit were being pursued by a stalker, possibly The Engineer, who wanted to tie up loose ends involving Voit. It seemed as if Voit had taken the doctor hostage, but this turned out to be a ploy to get her close enough so he could place his hand over her mouth, silencing them both. However, due to that very scene, I have reason to believe that Dr. Ochoa might not be as powerless as she appears; I suspect she is The Disciple herself.
Dr. Ochoa’s Emotional Reaction To Voit “Betraying” Her Was Strange
It Was An Emotional Response, Not A Professional One
The memory that remains vivid in my mind is when Dr. Ochoa angrily scolded Voit in his hospital room for stealing the phone and sabotaging the BAU. This was quite unusual, given her usual demeanor, and to make matters worse, it was highly unbecoming of a highly esteemed neuropsychiatrist who had always been admired by her peers for her professionalism.
At that instance, Dr. Ochoa didn’t exhibit the usual clinical detachment expected of a doctor tending to a patient. Instead, her behavior suggested a heartbroken lover, as if she had been wronged personally by Voit. This was quite unusual given that earlier, Dr. Ochoa refused a candy bar from Voit due to professional concerns. Her sudden emotional breakdown seemed abrupt and unexpected.
In Criminal Mind: Evolution, contrast her fierce response with Rossi’s; while Rossi recognized that Voit had sabotaged his team, he was also aware that Voit had taken such action to protect the innocent ex-wife and daughter of Kyle Mackey/The Undertaker, Lainey and Ava. This selfless act may not have earned Rossi’s respect, but it did elicit his understanding that Voit has undergone a significant transformation, effectively reforming from a psychopath.
It might be expected that Dr. Ochoa, given her extensive collaboration with Voit and her expertise in neuroscience and psychology, would anticipate that she wouldn’t be taken aback or deceived by his feelings. After all, she has direct access to his brain scans and can tell that he’s not feigning empathy at the moment.
Dr. Ochoa Sending Him Back To Prison Is Unprofessional
Why Would She Immediately Give Up After The First Setback?
Her excessive and emotionally charged response when Mackey’s family was informed by Voit, combined with Dr. Ochoa’s questionable decision to return Voit to prison, only served to heighten my suspicions about her. Given her experience as an accomplished neuropsychiatrist who has worked with difficult patients in the past, it’s hard to believe she wasn’t aware that Voit’s progress wouldn’t be a smooth, steady line. It’s uncommon and unprofessional to abandon hope for a patient after encountering the first obstacle.
It’s possible that one of two scenarios occurred to account for the unusual reaction. Perhaps Dr. Ochoa manipulated the security breach to move Voit back into general population at the prison, allowing other inmates to target him on her behalf. Or maybe she was genuinely upset about his betrayal, but not in the way we might assume. The first theory seems unlikely because The Disciple has consistently aimed to reawaken the old Voit.
In that instant, I wasn’t just Dr. Ochoa, but The Disciple, and as I warned Lainey and Ava of the danger they faced, it became clear to Rossi that the reformed Voit was indeed genuine. However, it also made me realize that the original, psychopathic Elias Voit was never coming back. It was this revelation that left me feeling betrayed, not because he acted without my knowledge, but because his actions showed me that the cold-hearted Voit of old would never resurface again.
Dr. Ochoa Is The Only One Who Knows Voit As Intimately As Cyrus
Voit’s Doctor Knows Everything About Him – And The Bau
It seems highly likely that Dr. Ochoa is The Disciple, but if the finale of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 introduces a new character as The Disciple, it would lack the same level of suspense and drama. In episode 7 of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, it was established that only Cyrus had such intimate knowledge of Voit, leading the BAU to believe that only he could have deepfaked Cyrus to torment Voit.
Despite their assertion, it is actually Dr. Ochoa who is well-acquainted with Voit. After all, for several months now, she has served as both his neuropsychiatrist and trusted therapist, and it’s to her that he has been confiding in details of his past. More so than the BAU, she has insight into the traumatic experiences Cyrus inflicted on Voit during his childhood and the abuse he subjected to his nephew. Given her psychiatric expertise, she is adept at manipulating his emotional triggers.
In my perspective, it seems she persuaded J.J. to collaborate with Voit not only to transform J.J.’s grief in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 into something beneficial, but also to delve deeper into Voit’s recollections. It’s uncertain if this was intended to enable him to inadvertently track down more members of the Sicarius network, resurface his suppressed psychopathic tendencies, or both. However, I have a feeling that The Disciple has been concealing himself behind the Dr. Ochoa mask, manipulating both Voit and the BAU for some nefarious purpose.
Nurse John Spoke To Someone Before Enacting His Plan – Who?
The Phone SIM Card Plotline Was Messy But Revealed Another Odd Moment
In the latest episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution, the intricate cell phone exchange scheme seemed rather confusing and hard to follow. The SIM cards were swapped, but then surprisingly, Voit stumbled upon an unused phone that was left in a nurse’s station. This whole scenario appears too chaotic, and it’s also quite convenient.
Main Cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 | |||
---|---|---|---|
Actor | Character | Seasons | Role |
Paget Brewster | Emily Prentiss | 2-18 | BAU Section Chief, formerly Interpol |
Joe Mantegna | David Rossi | 3-18 | Founding Father of the BAU |
A.J. Cook | Jennifer “JJ” Jareau | 1-18 | Formerly BAU Communications Liaison |
Kirsten Vangsness | Penelope Garcia | 1-18 | Technical Analyst |
Aisha Tyler | Dr. Tara Lewis | 11-18 | Forensic Psychologist |
Adam Rodriguez | Luke Alvez | 12-18 | Previously FBI Fugitive Task Force |
Ryan-James Hatanaka | Tyler Green | 16-18 | Former military intelligence officer, sister was an early Sicarius victim |
Zach Gilford | Elias Voit | 16-18 | Sicarius |
Aimee Garcia | Dr. Julia Ochoa | 18 | Neuropsychiatrist & Elias Voit’s doctor |
It’s unclear how the SIM card ended up in Nurse Monica’s phone, but we can speculate that it was John Perry who managed to secure a nursing position at Dr. Ochoa’s unit and is associated with the Sicarius network. Before enacting his scheme, John makes a call on his smuggled cellphone and informs someone that the time has come. However, the show never discloses the identity of this person.
It seems quite plausible that the individual John was conversing with was The Engineer, who appears to have an interest in getting rid of The Disciple. However, it’s also possible that this person was actually Dr. Ochoa in disguise. It remains unclear how Voit came into possession of the phone, whether it was a mere coincidence or if Dr. Ochoa manipulated the situation to observe Voit’s actions with it. If so, the storytelling becomes rather convoluted since there appear to be two separate plans, both involving a phone, that seem to have occurred by chance.
In an unusual instance during the previous episode, there was an awkward encounter with the doctor. When it became evident that Dr. Ochoa’s team had been infiltrated, Prentiss acted unusually careless. “What about me?” the doctor inquired when Prentiss suggested her staff should be replaced every fortnight. “Your professional standing does the talking,” Prentiss retorted casually. However, it was out of character for the shrewd and seasoned BAU Section Chief to disregard a potential security breach so lightly.
The Disciple Is Likely A Woman Given Her Soft Spot For Kids
Is Dr. Julia Ochoa Really Tessa Lebrun?
In this installment, it was hypothesized by the Behavioral Analysis Unit that The Disciple is probably female, given her affection for children. Additionally, we learned in this episode that Cyrus had a daughter named Tessa Lebrun, which even Voit was unaware of. Consequently, Cyrus would be clueless about her appearance or voice, making it simple for her to assume any identity and approach him.
Tessa hasn’t been mentioned in any document for approximately two decades, with the exception of a statement she made to the police around that time when she was in her twenties. Actress Aimee Garcia might seem much younger than her actual age, but she is currently in her mid-40s, making her the perfect fit for the character’s age.
I have a suspicion that Dr. Ochoa will be revealed as The Disciple and head of the Sicarius network, yet there’s something that remains unclear to me. If she is indeed Cyrus’ daughter, it seems plausible that she embodies his dark qualities. Maybe this explains her intense fascination with Elias Voit, questioning the man whom her biological father might have mentored, or perhaps why Cyrus nurtured Elias instead of her.
It’s evident that there’s an enigma surrounding Dr. Julia Ochoa in the third season of Criminal Minds: Evolution. She is uniquely acquainted with Voit and simultaneously informed about every progression in the BAU’s case, enabling her to keep tabs on Voit. There are an unusual number of questionable inconsistencies regarding Dr. Ochoa, but the finale will uncover who she’s loyal to.
