Evolution,” which is also the eighteenth season of “Criminal Minds” as a whole, is now streaming new episodes for subscribers on Paramount+. The highly anticipated comeback of Matthew Gray Gubler as Spencer Reid isn’t the only reason fans should rejoice in the 2025 TV lineup. Not only has the crime drama been renewed for another season, but a backstage photo hinting at who survives Season 3 has added to my excitement for more than just knowing there will be more of these characters.
The streaming platform Paramount+ announced that “Criminal Minds: Evolution” will return for its fourth season ahead of its third premiere, and a new image has surfaced featuring an elated cast excited to resume filming. Here’s a sneak peek at who will reappear in the upcoming episodes: (spoiler alert)

It appears that, with the exception of a character returning as a hallucination similar to Voit in the previous season before his dramatic ending, it’s expected that these characters will make it through the Season 3 finale: Joe Mantegna, Aisha Tyler, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, and Ryan-James Hatanaka. However, it remains to be seen if they’ll all emerge unscathed.
For Tyler’s Tara Lewis, Rodriguez’s Luke Alvez, Cook’s JJ, and Brewster’s Emily Brentiss, it seems unlikely that their poses in the photo were intentionally chosen to suggest an arm amputation, given they were not depicted as such at the end of Season 3. However, it’s intriguing to hypothesize about potential returns, as such revelations wouldn’t necessarily spoil the upcoming 2025 episodes.
Although I appreciate my beloved characters from the Criminal Minds clan, it’s not their return in Season 4 that truly sparks my excitement. Instead, what often dampens my spirits is the extended wait between seasons for many shows, such as Bridgerton and Stranger Things. I can’t help but yearn for the latter. However, even though Evolution debuted on Paramount+ and benefits from the liberties of streaming for adult language and shocking plot twists unimaginable on CBS, it seems to be following the typical hiatus length common in network TV programming.
Season 2 concluded in August 2024, while Season 3 began in May 2025. Notably, the production for Season 4 started before all episodes of Season 3 had aired, hinting that we might experience another stretch of months rather than years between the final episode of Season 3 and the premiere of Season 4. As a television journalist who frequently covers crime dramas and procedurals, the idea of a top-notch drama series like Criminal Minds releasing anew each year is something truly exciting to look forward to.
It appears that HBO Max’s show, The Pitt, is following suit with filming for Season 2 set to begin shortly, aiming for a January 2026 debut. This could potentially mark a shift towards more consistent scheduling for streaming series, rather than the extended hiatuses like those seen in Wednesday.
As for the upcoming Season 4, it brings a sense of reassurance to Season 3 of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” reducing the tension that would otherwise be present if the future were still unclear. Fresh episodes are scheduled every Thursday on Paramount+, and they also offer all fifteen seasons of the original CBS series for streaming.
