‘Creature From the Black Lagoon’ Remake in the Works From James Wan

As a fervent admirer of cinematic mastery, I am absolutely thrilled to witness James Wan’s return to the depths of the sea for his next feature film – a modernized remake of the iconic “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” With his unparalleled ability to blend horror and visual spectacle, I have no doubt that this reimagining will be a chilling masterpiece that pays homage to the original classic while injecting a fresh dose of adrenaline.

The director behind “Aquaman,” James Wan, is diving back into oceanic projects with his upcoming film. He’s working on a modern adaptation of “Creature From the Black Lagoon” and may take the helm for this project under Universal Pictures, as preliminary discussions are ongoing.

The project is presented as a “realistic, contemporary reimagining that emphasizes intense terror while honoring the original timeless classic.” Since 1954, when the movie “Creature From the Black Lagoon” was first released on the silver screen under Jack Arnold’s direction and featuring Richard Carlson and Julia Adams, various directors such as Guillermo del Toro have endeavored to revive this black-and-white monster flick about a team of researchers who come face to face with a primordial beast in the Amazonian depths. However, none of these attempts to bring it back to life have succeeded thus far.

The film “Creature From the Black Lagoon” marks Universal’s latest endeavor to bring their collection of iconic monsters back to the big screen. Following the failure of their shared monster universe concept, as demonstrated by Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy,” they decided to focus on individual movies instead of a connected Dark Universe. The results have been varied. Universal achieved both critical acclaim and financial success with 2020’s “The Invisible Man” starring Elisabeth Moss, which earned $143 million worldwide on a budget of just $7 million. On the other hand, “Renfield,” featuring Nicholas Hoult as Dracula’s eccentric sidekick, didn’t fare well, grossing only $26 million globally.

Atomic Monster, renowned for horror blockbusters such as “M3GAN,” “The Nun,” and “Annabelle,” will be responsible for the upcoming film’s production. This production company is spearheaded by the creative genius behind successful horror franchises like “The Conjuring” and “Saw.” Worth mentioning, Wan has also directed two movies, “Furious 7” and “Aquaman,” which have collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide. He is represented by CAA, Stacey Testro International, and Myman Greenspan Fox Rosenberg Mobasser Younger & Light.

In this project, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott take on the roles of executive producers. Meanwhile, Jay Polidoro, a senior executive at Universal responsible for production development, will supervise the project on behalf of the studio.
