‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Producer Janice Chua Joins Third Culture Content, U.S. Adaptation of Korean Hit ‘King the Land’ in Works (EXCLUSIVE)

The producer of “Crazy Rich Asians,” Janice Chua, has joined global content production company Third Culture Content (TCC) as co-founder and producer. At the same time, the company announced they are working on an American version of the popular Korean drama “King the Land.

The Los Angeles and Seoul-based production company, known for creating the bilingual series “Dramaworld” in English and Korean, which premiered on Netflix worldwide before its second season appeared on Prime Video (USA), ITV (UK), CBC (Canada), iQiyi (Southeast Asia), Tving (Korea), and U-Next (Japan), is planning an ambitious expansion strategy for the year 2025.

Joanne Chua recently became a part of TCC after serving as Vice President of international development and production at Imagine Entertainment. During her tenure, she led the charge on local-language content projects. Notably, she served as an executive producer for Disney’s “Taiwan Crime Stories,” which garnered twelve Golden Bell Award nominations and recognition in two categories at Busan’s Asia Contents Awards and Global OTT Awards in 2023.

In 2023, the company’s version of “King the Land” will retell SLL’s popular workplace romance that was on Netflix’s Global Top Ten list for Non-English TV for eight straight weeks. The original Korean series tells the story of a high-ranking executive from a luxury hotel empire who unexpectedly forms an alliance with a staff member during a struggle over inheritance.

Previously, this individual held the position of Vice President for Development and Production in Asia at Ivanhoe Pictures. Among her producer credits is the 2018 blockbuster hit “Crazy Rich Asians”. Earlier on, she managed international business and co-productions as the Director of International at Beijing Galloping Horse, handling international sales for John Woo’s historical epic “The Crossing”.

2025 marks a thrilling new phase for Third Culture Content, a time filled with growth ambitions according to Sean Dulake, co-founder and CEO. “Joining us is Janice,” he said, “who brings valuable skills, creative insights, and a profound grasp of multicultural narratives. These qualities will be crucial as we push TCC forward, expanding our reach and delivering captivating, impactful content to our partners and audience.

More recently, Dulake and Chua have been appointed as the heads of the CAPCA initiative (Canada-Asia Pacific Co-Production Accelerator). This program is supported by the Canadian government agency RESO (Racial Equity Screen Office) and SLL. The goal of this venture is to offer resources and networking opportunities for Canadian screenwriters and producers who are working on TV shows destined for North American audiences.

For a long time now, my dream has been to establish a platform that fosters global collaboration, and I’m thrilled to say that TCC is exactly that! I can’t wait to join forces with Sean as we aim to elevate Third Culture Content even further. In 2025, we plan to extend our influence in innovative ways and remain dedicated to amplifying unique voices from around the world in storytelling.

TCC takes pride in its multicultural project pipeline, which includes partnerships with artists hailing from various countries like the U.S., Canada, South Korea, India, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. In 2021, the company garnered seed funding from key investors such as YouTube co-founder Steve Chen, Strong Ventures, and Yintai Investment Company.
