As a long-time fan of Toys For Bob and the Crash Bandicoot series, I was both excited and saddened by the recent news about the cancellation of “Project Dragon,” which former concept artist Nicholas Kole revealed was not a new Spyro or Crash 5 game.
In early 2024, Toys For Bob, the creators of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, shared that they had left their publisher Activision Blizzard to operate independently. More recently, they revealed a publishing deal with Microsoft while working on their upcoming project, as mentioned in a company update from February 2024.
There have been rumors that some projects were shelved at Toys For Bob before they became an independent studio, and a former employee has added fuel to these rumors. Nicholas Kole, a former concept artist at the studio, discussed this on Twitter in response to a query about a canceled game titled “Project Dragon.” He disclosed that this project was not what people had anticipated.
Over the weekend, Kole talked about the abandoned “Project Dragon” that was being worked on at a different studio. It was later disclosed that this was Phoenix Labs, based on information from Principal 3D artist Michael Vicente. Kole went into detail about the development process of “Project Dragon,” showing concept art, character designs, and even shared some composed music for the canceled title.
People won’t be hearing about a fifth installment of Spyro’s adventures, which may sadden some fans in the future.

Daniel Barnes expressed his disappointment when he learned that “Project Dragon” wasn’t going to be a new Spyro game, as many fans had speculated due to its name. However, according to Kole’s post, this was not accurate.
Someday, people will discover that it wasn’t Spyro after all, but rather a fifth installment of Crash Bandicoot that never came to be. This revelation is sure to sadden many fans.
As a longtime fan of the Crash Bandicoot series, I was utterly disappointed and intrigued by Kole’s recent revelation about the cancellation of not one but two Crash games: “Project Dragon” and Crash 5. Kole shared that these projects were being developed at different studios. The news of a canceled Crash 5 game hit us fans hard, especially since we’ve been eagerly waiting for a new installment in the series.
