Cradle Film Studios Moves Forward as Backers Tout Plans for ‘Most Advanced, High-Tech Studio’ in Africa (EXCLUSIVE)

This week, Cradle Film Studios, which was previously expected to be completed, moved a step closer as it secured investment from the Industrial Development Corp. (IDC) and entered its financing phase. This news was shared by Joel Chikapa Phiri, chairman of Known Associates Group, at the Cannes Film Festival.

Following the conclusion of a feasibility study on a 30-acre plot located near Johannesburg, Phiri announced that preparations are underway to commence construction in January 2026. This project, according to him, will be an innovative high-tech film studio complex, marking a significant advancement for Africa.

In collaboration with Moonlighting Films, Africa’s leading production service provider, Known Associates unveiled their studio project back in 2022.

Phiri stated that Cradle Film Studios marks an exciting evolution in African cinema, blending advanced technology with a dedication to environmental responsibility, workforce education, and cultural conservation.

The development is planned to be located near the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cradle of Humankind, approximately 30 miles from Johannesburg, and it’s only a short 10-minute drive from an international airport.

Covering over 440,000 square feet in total, this facility will feature approximately 160,000 square feet of cutting-edge sound stages, including Africa’s most advanced virtual and intelligent stage, as well as the continent’s first indoor underwater stage, inspired by designs from Pinewood Studios in the U.K. There will also be designated areas for stunts, wardrobe, props, set design, artist assistance, and post-production work.

Phiri further declared intentions to create an African-first AI-infused crew training institution. This initiative aims at cultivating a workforce that’s adaptable to the future and rooted in local context, serving global production needs.

The project is primarily led by Nico Dekker, who owns the Cape Town Film Studios that have served as a location for high-profile Hollywood films like “Mad Max: Fury Road” and the live-action “One Piece” series on Netflix.

Dekker stated that our aim is to transform CFS into the cutting-edge, specifically developed film and virtual studio in Africa, appealing to both global and local productions. By embracing sustainable development principles, cultivating a skilled local workforce, and boasting an experienced management team, Cradle Film Studios is ready to reshape the future of African film production.”

“According to Dekker, we’re striving to make CFS the most innovative, custom-built studio for films and virtual productions in Africa. This studio will attract both international and local projects due to its commitment to sustainability, skilled local staff, and experienced leadership team. In essence, Cradle Film Studios is preparing to revolutionize African film production.

Kagiso Bapela, who oversees services for the Strategic Business Unit at South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation, noted: “Our IDC backs projects throughout the media industry spectrum – encompassing television broadcasting, film studios, and advanced digital platforms. Cradle Film Studios is an integral part of this spectrum and aims to substantially boost studio capabilities in South Africa. It seeks to position the country as a cutting-edge filming location with a proficient local workforce. Furthermore, Cradle Film Studios will play a role in skills training in Gauteng and encourage transformation regarding studio infrastructure ownership.
