The adorable pixel-art monster-growing game, Monsterpatch, kicked off its Kickstarter campaign on Tuesday, and it was met with an overwhelming wave of support. The initial goal was a modest $15,000, but astonishingly, this target was reached in only 16 minutes after the campaign went live! The creator, Sean Young, announced on social media that within 24 hours, Monsterpatch had already surpassed its funding goal by more than five times. In a nutshell, the game Monsterpatch is labeled as a warmhearted role-playing game where you gather monsters. It draws inspiration from vintage pixel graphics, using simple designs and vibrant colors that exude character. As an avid fan of old-school Pokémon games, this resonates with me. Unlike games such as Pokémon, Monsterpatch stands out due to its farming and town-building elements.

On a drifting island realm teeming with unexplored territories and mysterious creatures lies the world of Monsterpatch. In this game, you assume the role of an apprentice wizard, armed with your spellbook and wand to ensnare monsters and clash against rival wizards. Traverse through diverse cities, tackle obstacles, yet feel free to retreat to your town whenever needed, where you can manage your farm or socialize with your captured creatures in the open world. It’s also mentioned that non-player characters might eventually settle in your town as well.

Just as in the Pokemon games, the Monsterpatch series will offer two distinct versions: Skyfarer and Aurora. Unlike the Pokemon games, you won’t need to purchase both; instead, you can pick one when starting a new game file. Each version of the game will introduce its own unique antagonist with different narratives. Players will have the ability to trade MoNs across save files and even engage in battles against their own characters.

In the game, the fights take place sequentially and offer both simplicity and quickness. At most, there can be four characters, known as MoNs, on either side of the battlefield, with various moves affecting distinct locations, emphasizing the strategic positioning of your party. As you embark on this adventure, you can select two from six initial character options. Most MoNs undergo three stages of transformation, which not only change their physical form but also likely boost their power. The game features nine different “Houses,” referred to as types, that influence a MoN’s strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and move selection.

In this game, you’ll get the freedom to shape your town as per your imagination: “You’re given full authority over terrain, water bodies, soil, pathways, fences, trees, and numerous other elements.” Gather resources and acquire blueprints to build homes, items, and ornaments. Bring in Non-Player Characters (NPCs) to aid in the growth and administration of your town, “and don’t forget, you can reward them with ‘MoNs’ to form their own teams, engage in friendly contests!

According to the rewards offered through Kickstarter, it appears that the game titled “Monsterpatch” is targeting a release date in December 2025. While this would be exciting news, it’s important to remember that creating video games, especially for an independent developer, can be quite challenging. We’ll maintain our optimism but also understand if there are delays along the way. At present, “Monsterpatch” is slated to debut on PC via Steam. The developers have mentioned in their FAQ section that they will inform backers if they receive approval for any console launches. So, console enthusiasts, keep your fingers crossed!
