Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Adam Christopher’s Star Wars: Master of Evil
The Clone Wars dramatically changed the Star Wars galaxy, and Count Dooku was a key figure throughout the entire conflict. Operating as Darth Tyranus, Dooku was Darth Sidious’ most important follower. It’s interesting to consider how much Dooku actually knew about Sidious’ ultimate, long-term scheme.
Although Dooku was the public face of the Separatists, he secretly worked to benefit both sides of the war, following Palpatine’s plans. However, a recent Star Wars story has raised questions about how much Dooku truly knew about the Clone Wars and Palpatine’s manipulations during the conflict he helped start.
Count Dooku Was Instrumental In Starting The Clone Wars For Palpatine
Count Dooku was central to the beginning of the Clone Wars. Working for Palpatine, he secretly prepared both sides – the Republic’s clone army and the Separatist droid forces – well before the conflict officially began at Geonosis. Essentially, Dooku was responsible for creating the forces that would fight in the war.
Under the guise of Tyranus, Dooku took control of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas’s confidential plan to build a clone army for the Republic. Following Sifo-Dyas’s death, Dooku made sure the Kaminoans kept working on the project, posing as their official customer.
Darth Sidious/Palpatine secretly engineered the clone army to fight against the Jedi. He did this by having inhibitor chips implanted in the clones during their creation on Kamino, disguising the chips as a security measure.
Dooku erased all records of Kamino from the Jedi Archives to prevent the Jedi from finding out about the clone army too soon. This ensured the Jedi wouldn’t learn about the clones until Palpatine decided the moment was right, keeping the war on schedule as he intended.
Count Dooku created the Confederacy of Independent Systems, bringing together businesses, planets, and dissatisfied leaders who felt the Republic and the Jedi were corrupt. But, the Confederacy was actually secretly run by the Sith.
Dooku was instrumental in creating General Grievous for the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS), and he actively worked to worsen and extend the Clone Wars until Palpatine was ready to make his move. Essentially, Dooku helped Palpatine create the ideal conditions for taking power and establishing the new Galactic Empire.
How Much Did Dooku Actually Know About The Clone Wars’ Aftermath?
Although Dooku played a key role in starting and understanding the Clone Wars, he didn’t seem to know the full extent of what Sidious was trying to achieve.
Official Star Wars stories have revealed that Count Dooku knew about the secret programming within the clone army, including the infamous Order 66. Because he helped create the clones, he understood they were designed to eventually turn against and destroy the Jedi, paving the way for the Sith to take over.
In The Clone Wars series, Count Dooku consistently undermined efforts to achieve peace or quickly end the war. He seemed to understand the conflict had to continue until Darth Sidious’s plan was fully underway, proving he was acting in accordance with his master’s carefully planned schedule.
Crucially, several reliable sources show Dooku understood the Separatists were ultimately going to fail. Although he saw the Republic as flawed, he trusted Palpatine to establish a new, orderly government – one he expected to share power in with his master. He even planned to eventually betray Sidious and take control himself, following the Sith’s traditional Rule of Two.
Revenge of the Sith begins with the death of Count Dooku near the end of the Clone Wars, revealing he never understood how Palpatine was manipulating him. Palpatine had been secretly training Anakin Skywalker to become his new Sith apprentice for years, and Dooku mistakenly thought he would remain relevant when the Republic became the Empire.
Dooku witnessed a glimpse of the future after the Clone Wars, which convinced him to remain loyal to Darth Sidious, though he never realized how easily Sidious could replace him. Interestingly, a recent Star Wars story reveals Dooku actually knew more than we previously believed – a surprising twist!
A Brand-New Star Wars Story Claims Dooku Believed The Separatists Would Win
Adam Christopher’s latest book, Star Wars: Master of Evil, reveals a surprising inconsistency in what Count Dooku knew about the Clone Wars.
The book mainly focuses on Darth Vader after the events of Revenge of the Sith, but it begins with a prologue about Count Dooku during the Clone Wars. In this prologue, Dooku is searching for a powerful source of dark side energy for Darth Sidious. A particular section reveals Dooku’s conviction that the Separatists were fated to win the Clone Wars, rather than the Republic.
A war was raging, and Dooku and the Separatists seemed destined to win. This victory would clear the path for Darth Sidious to take power, ushering in an era ruled by the Sith. Dooku wondered if, one day, his master would return with him, or if the roles would be reversed, and he would be the one in command. He chuckled at the possibility.
This contradicts previous Star Wars stories, showing Dooku believed the Confederacy of Independent Systems would ultimately fail as part of Sidious’s plan. However, it now suggests Dooku wasn’t fully aware of Sidious’s overall scheme, which is a surprising twist.
If Dooku truly thought the Separatists could win, then Sidious must have kept important information from him. However, this idea doesn’t fit with established Star Wars lore, which generally shows Dooku understanding the Separatists were only meant to be a short-term force and that their planets would ultimately become part of the Empire. Because of this, this new development feels out of place within the larger Star Wars story.
Ultimately, a win for the Republic actually made it easier for Palpatine to take control. He was already running things as Supreme Chancellor and had secretly corrupted the Senate to gain even more power – Dooku was aware of this. Transforming the Republic into a Galactic Empire was a much simpler process than starting from scratch.
As a critic, I’ve always found Count Dooku to be a calculating mastermind, so the idea that he genuinely believed the Separatists could win the Clone Wars always felt off. It doesn’t align with his long-term Sith strategy, and frankly, diminishes his role in orchestrating the entire conflict as part of a larger plan. Honestly, after revisiting ‘Star Wars: Master of Evil,’ I think that particular line is just a bit of a misstep – a minor inconsistency we can safely ignore.
