Corsican Crime Drama ‘The Kingdom,’ Cannes Hit, Lands at Vertigo for U.K., Ireland (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile with an affinity for gritty, character-driven narratives, I am genuinely captivated by the upcoming release of “The Kingdom” directed by Julien Colonna. This film, set against the backdrop of Corsica in 1995, promises to be a riveting exploration of the complexities and consequences of the gangster lifestyle – a theme that resonates deeply with my own life experiences.

UK and Irish distribution rights for the movie “The Kingdom,” directed by French director Julien Colonna, have been purchased by Vertigo Releasing. This Corsican filmmaker’s organized crime thriller and coming-of-age drama is scheduled to hit theaters in spring 2025.

The movie, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, revolves around a teenager named Lesia who unexpectedly finds her gangster father hiding with his associates at a secluded villa. This story unfolds in the beautiful yet tense setting of Corsica during 1995. When chaos breaks out in the criminal underworld, Lesia and her father are compelled to escape together.

The image presents Ghjuvanna Benedetti and Saveriu Santucci, who take on the main characters as a daughter and father, in a production largely starring actors of Corsican origin.

Critic Peter Debruge, writing for EbMaster at Cannes, observed that Julien Colonna’s first narrative feature, “The Gangster Chronicles,” delves into the personal sacrifices inherent in the criminal underworld. It’s not just about the reduced lifespan, but also the poor quality of the time left, much of which is spent hiding and watching one’s back. Colonna largely toned down the genre’s typical spectacle, delaying on-screen violence until late in the story, making it coldly effective when it finally appears.

The Kingdom” is created by Chi-Fou-Mi Productions, financed by Canal+ and Netflix. It also receives support from the Centre National Du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée and Collectivité de Corse, in collaboration with CNC. Entourage Sofica, Artistes, and 2B are involved in the production as well.

Adding to its lineup of upcoming projects, Vertigo now boasts “Your Monster,” a Sundance London prize winner with Melissa Barrera, as well as “The Surfer” starring Nicolas Cage, the action-packed “Sunray” featuring Royal Marines, and “Last Swim,” a coming-of-age drama headlined by newcomer Deba Hekmat.

Previously, the U.K. distributor has been responsible for disseminating critically acclaimed independent films such as “Sound of Metal,” “Boiling Point,” and the recent hit movie “Late Night With Devil” featuring David Dastmalchian.
