‘Copycat Killer’ Producer GrX Studio Launching $45 Million Asia Spring Fund

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for Asian cinema, I must say that GrX Studio’s ambitious expansion plans have left me utterly thrilled and eagerly anticipating what’s to come. With its impressive lineup of Mandarin-language series and horror films, it seems the studio is poised to dominate the regional film industry.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m excited to share that GrX Studio is aiming high, with plans for global expansion that reflect our prominent status in Taiwan’s film and television production sector.

On Monday, during a swiftly moving gathering at the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival, the company revealed their strategy to put approximately $45 million into a span of fifteen Mandarin-series and five horror movies over a period of five years, using a fresh investment fund.

The special event featured some of the present company’s current productions, once called Greener Grass Productions. This group is renowned for the successful series “Copycat Killer,” which has proven popular on the streaming platform Netflix.

Actors Ning Chang from Taiwan and Lien Binh Phat from Vietnam, who are featured in “The Outlaw Doctor,” a crime series currently in post-production that was co-produced by GrX alongside the Public Television Service Foundation (PTS) and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), can also be seen with Korean star Jinyoung and Taiwanese actress Moon Lee in “The Photo from 1977.” This romantic film, aided by the Hakka Affairs Council, has its script development backed by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and is financially supported by the Hakka Public Communication Foundation.

At the event, other titles I found captivating were: a chilling horror movie titled “Trapped in Yellow”; a heartfelt boys’ love (BL) feature film named “Wild With You,” which was produced by the esteemed Phoebe Ma, who has won the Golden Bell Awards; and an intriguing thriller series entitled “The Ones I Killed and the Ones Who Killed Me,” based on the beloved Japanese novel by Akira Higashiyama. This series is still in development.

A TV series titled “KOHAKU: The Night’s Traitor,” set in both Taiwan and Japan, will be helmed by Lien Yi-chi and Kentaro Hagiwara. This historical show explores themes of rebuilding and innovative concepts regarding the future of mankind. Structured as eight 45-minute episodes, if it proves popular, GrX plans for it to span across three seasons.

GrX Studio plans to broadcast the reality cooking show “Go! Go! Michelin” and manage the global distribution for the newly debuted Taiwanese and K-pop variety show titled “SCOOL.

The ‘Asia Spring‘ fund, totaling $45 million, aims to strengthen the company’s and Taiwan’s role as a thriving center for Asian co-productions. Dennis Wu, the strategy and chief investment officer, expressed this goal by saying, “We aim to attract top filmmakers from diverse nations and territories to work with us through this initiative.” Currently, Taiwanese companies are experiencing a resurgence as they provide Chinese-language productions for Asia, while many mainland China and Hong Kong firms are shifting focus and international streaming services cannot operate in the mainland.

Wu stated that the present collection revolves around the central ideas of comfort, excitement, and rebellion. He mentioned that the studio maintains a system of functions in Taiwan, mainland China, and Singapore, and now requires to expand and solidify its distribution network.
