Remedy Entertainment, known for creating games like Alan Wake and Control, has recently disclosed some information about their upcoming single-player title. In an interview with Stephen Totilo of Game File, it was revealed that the budget for Control 2 will be slightly lower compared to that of Alan Wake 2. This unexpected move comes from an independent studio that has garnered significant critical acclaim in recent years. Remedy’s CEO, Tero Virtala, shared that they will adopt a unique strategy for this project.
Control 2 will have a smaller budget than Alan Wake 2, according to Remedy CEO
Back in 2019, I was captivated by the release of “Control” from Remedy Entertainment. Fast forward a few years, and in 2023, they dropped the long-awaited sequel to Alan Wake, a game that had been thirteen years in the making: Alan Wake 2. To my surprise, it managed to snatch multiple Game Awards even amidst stiff competition from heavyweights like Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
What made Alan Wake 2 truly remarkable was its expansion of the Remedy-verse, a shared universe that has been subtly weaving its threads across their games. In this new installment, the Federal Bureau of Control, the origin of “Control’s” title, made a significant appearance. Interestingly enough, our protagonist from “Control” even graced an episode in the Night Springs DLC for Alan Wake 2.
Next month, Remedy is set to continue this thrilling journey with FBC: Firebreak, another game set within the Federal Bureau of Control. I can hardly wait!
In an interview with Game File, CEO Tero Virtala expresses his aim to enlighten game developers about the financial aspects of game production. “We’re revealing our company finances and discussing project finances as well,” he says, “so they grasp the broader picture in which they work and why budgets are set at this particular level.”
Virtala’s approach is to prevent excessive increases in video game budgets, which have resulted in numerous layoffs, studio shutdowns, and cancelled projects. The budget for Control 2 stands at 50 million euros, with Virtala noting that “if the team adheres to this budget and the game sells two million units, ‘we reach a break-even point for each game.'” If Remedy can efficiently produce high-quality games without overspending, they might not have to wait two years before realizing a profit, as was the case with Alan Wake 2.
It’s invigorating and intriguing to witness a groundbreaking game studio innovating their approach to game creation. The video game sector is in turmoil, with decreasing console and hardware sales and overpriced games consistently underperforming. A shift seems necessary. Not all games require an escalation in scale or cost. I fervently wish that Remedy succeeds with this new strategy, and I hope other studios follow suit. Even without delving into the fact that Remedy is currently producing some of the most engaging games available, as someone who isn’t particularly fond of first-person shooter games, I’m still eagerly anticipating FBC: Firebreak in the coming month, and I can hardly wait to discover more about their ongoing projects.
