Constanza Majluf-Baeza Teams With Cannes Queer Palm-Winner Ignacio Juricic on ‘Pink Desert,’ Pitching at Malaga’s MAFF Co-Pro Sidebar (EXCLUSIVE)

Award-winning actor, screenwriter, and director Constanza Majluf-Baeza, who has previously won grants from the National Board of Review as a student, is currently working on her first full-length film titled “Pink Desert” (“Desierto rosa”). This project will be part of the upcoming MAFF Co-Production Fund and Meeting Event at the Malaga Film Festival.

1970, in a barren mining town in northern Chile’s desert, the story unfolds in “Pink Desert,” centered around Mariola, who is known as Mario in the community. The infrequent showers bring vibrancy to Earth’s driest spot, and amidst this desolate landscape, Mariola receives an invitation from a traveling troupe of transgender women to join them on their journey to Lima, Peru. As they traverse the land, Mariola embarks on a self-discovery journey, uncovering her true identity. Upon returning home, a wave of political and social change sweeps across Chile, encouraging Mariola to embrace who she truly is.

In the latest headlines, Mestizo Studios from Peru has joined forces with Flamingo Producciones of Chile on a project titled “Pink Desert.” This project has attracted much interest and backing, including funding for scriptwriting, re-scripting, and production from the Chilean Audiovisual Fund. Additionally, it won the Columbia University Sloan Screenplay Award and the Final Draft Ventana Sur award.

The Peruvian studio Mestizo Studios is now working with Flamingo Producciones from Chile on a project called “Pink Desert.” This project has received support from the Chilean Audiovisual Fund for scriptwriting, re-scripting, and production, and it also won awards like the Columbia University Sloan Screenplay Award and the Final Draft Ventana Sur award.

The project “Pink Desert” was part of the collaborative production laboratory between Latin America and Europe, known as Cine Qua Non Lab, which is supported by Ibermedia, Fundación Carolina’s CDPAI, and El Principio del Film during Ventana Sur.

Apart from his directing duties, Majluf-Baeza also collaborates on scriptwriting with the renowned Chilean filmmaker Ignacio Juricic Merillán, famous for his short “Lost Queens” (2015), which won the Cannes Queer Palm, and “Enigma” (2018) that was screened in San Sebastián Horizons. In a supporting role, Chilean acting legend Alfredo Castro (“Tony Manero,” “El Conde,” “They Will Be Dust”) is featured. As for the film’s main cast, they are yet to be announced.
