In Episode 8 of Season 3, Mark encounters his deadliest adversary to date – Conquest – and based on the comic series, their confrontation may not mark the end of their encounters.
In Season 2, when Invincible encountered Anissa, she cautioned him, “Another one is on the way, and if you continue to defy your fate, he’ll show you the mistake in your ways. The consequence for all of us on this planet will be severe.
In the closing moments of Episode 7, Conquest warned Mark, “Prepare yourself, worm,” signifying his impending arrival. As his figure cast a dark silhouette overhead, their mid-air encounter set the stage for the most epic battle yet, concluding the season in the Season 3 finale.
This intense fight is remarkably comparable, some might say even surpassing, the fierce battle between Mark and Omni-Man. And for fans of Conquest, there’s a high chance he’ll make another appearance. Be warned: major spoilers are coming up!
What happens to Conquest in the Invincible comics?
Following his defeat at the hands of Mark, Conquest does not meet his end. Instead, Cecil maintains his life and imprisones him within a massive, 400-ton block of sturdy, tempered steel.
Not even a muscle twitch from him is tolerated; if he stirs to awareness again, I’m certain he will disclose all details about the Viltrum Empire and the danger it presents for our world.
Hey there, Cecil, it seems like you’ve got a bit of a brain fart this time around. The plan certainly didn’t unfold as expected. In Issue #68, Conquest managed to free himself (given his strength as one of Invincible’s formidable characters) and promptly zoomed off into space. We don’t catch up with him until Issue #70.5, or Invincible Returns, where he informs Thragg, the high-ranking regent of the empire, about his unsuccessful mission.
Thragg deeply disapproves of Conquest, as he serves no other purpose than acting like a savage beast, deriving joy solely from shedding blood and having it on his fangs… A beast is valuable only when it listens to its owner’s commands.
As a devoted follower, I found myself in a tricky situation when Thragg presented me with an unusual command: cease my alliance with Nolan, Allen the Alien, and Mark to hinder their aid to the Coalition of Planets against the formidable Viltrum empire.
Conquest & Invincible have a rematch in the comics
This significantly initiates the Viltrumite War saga as Mark and Oliver depart Earth for an extended period to engage in combat against the empire. Towards the conclusion of Issue #71, their vessel is cleaved in two by a puzzling missile – it’s Conquest, Lucan, and another Viltrumite warrior. “Ah, Mark,” he exclaims, “It’s simply wonderful to see you once more.
Making everything clear, my instructions are straightforward: eliminate you and all your companions. I’m thrilled for a second chance to encounter you. I must confess, I underestimated your abilities in our previous encounter. I hope you didn’t bring the girl with you on this occasion?
In a fray unfolding across the cosmos, Conquest found himself engaged in combat with Nolan and Oliver. Meanwhile, he traded blows with Mark. “I awoke trapped within an iron shell, buried beneath your world,” he clarifies, “It seems someone underestimated my power.
It’s clear that Mark is very upset with Cecil, but due to the pressing demands of Conquest, he can’t afford to keep his anger towards Cecil. When Oliver finds himself running short of breath, he escapes to a neighboring planet, which causes Conquest to disregard Mark in order to chase after him.
Does Conquest die?
Conquest dies in Invincible Issue #72, although he briefly shows up again later in the comics.
Before Oliver reaches him, Invincible forcefully pushes Conquest onto the planet’s ground, generating a massive tremor. Dazed by this impact, Conquest tries to fly away, but Mark holds onto him tightly, even as Conquest repeatedly punches his body – with such intensity that his fist passes right through him, similar to how he dealt with Atom Eve in Issue #64.
Mark continues to hold on tenaciously, ultimately strangling Conquest to death. Upon arrival, Nolan and Oliver find Mark barely clinging to life, writhing in agony with his internal organs spilled across Conquest’s deceased body.
As Mark is getting better, Nolan lays to rest the warrior known as Conquest. “Though he strayed in his final years,” he shares with Oliver, “Conquest was unmatched among the Viltrumite warriors.
Regardless of his actions, there’s an undeniable sense of respect due to him. He warranted a fitting funeral… all his deeds were for the sake of the Viltrumite empire. In a sense, that elevated him above me in terms of character.
Rest assured, Conquest is definitely deceased. Yet, astonishingly, he appears in Issue #108 when Invincible and Robot journey to another dimension to locate Angstrom Levy. Upon their arrival, he invites them to join him at the citadel, but not much else transpires after that.
During our conversation with Robert Kirkman, he shed light on why Spawn wasn’t part of the Invincible War and hinted that a Rex Splode special might not be forthcoming in the near future.
