With Pope Francis’ passing on April 21, there was a surge in viewers watching the 2024 movie “Conclave” from home. This film can be found on numerous PVOD platforms and is currently free for Amazon Prime Video subscribers to stream. The drama centers around the process of choosing a new religious leader.
The film titled “Conclave,” featuring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, is directed by Edward Berger. This movie was a strong contender during this year’s award season, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Best Actor, and numerous other accolades and nominations. Unfortunately, Pope Francis passed away on Monday, just a day after Easter, at the age of 88 following complications from a stroke.
The number of people tuning into “Conclave” increased significantly on Monday following news of Pope Francis’ demise. Luminate, a service that monitors streaming content viewership, reported this surge. Initially, “Conclave” garnered approximately 1.8 million minutes of viewing time on April 20. However, by the end of April 21, this figure had escalated to a staggering 6.9 million minutes viewed.
The 2019 Netflix drama “The Two Popes,” another film centered around the Vatican, saw a surge in interest. On Sunday, it was watched for 290,000 minutes, but on Monday, that figure skyrocketed to 1.5 million minutes watched, marking a significant increase of 417%.
During the time when the Oscars were being celebrated, members of the “Conclave” cast were frequently inquired about Pope Francis’ health due to his hospitalization for kidney failure towards the end of February. It was during this period that the “Conclave” cast attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Isabella Rossellini, one of its stars, expressed her well wishes for the Pope on stage, saying: “We hope for a swift recovery for Pope Francis.
She also expressed her hopes for Pope Francis’ wellbeing, commenting to reporters backstage. Her co-star Sergio Castellitto added that for those residing in Rome, living so near the Vatican creates a more intimate bond. Seeing the Pope’s helicopter take off and return is an everyday occurrence, making the Italian connection with the Pope feel more personal. To reiterate, both she and her co-star truly wish him well.
Following the passing of Pope Francis, I, much like countless others, have taken to social media to express my heartfelt tribute. Notable figures in Hollywood, including filmmaker Martin Scorsese, have voiced their sorrow, describing his demise as an “immense” loss for our global community.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’d say, “This man was truly exceptional in every sense. He openly admitted his flaws, yet shone with wisdom and kindness. His unwavering dedication to the righteous was evident, and he recognized that ignorance was a devastating curse upon humanity. Consequently, he remained an avid learner and a beacon of knowledge, always enlightening others. Moreover, forgiveness was not just a concept for him; it was a universal principle he lived by, constantly practicing and promoting it.
