Following my Golden Globe win for Best Screenplay for “Conclave” on Sunday night, I couldn’t help but respond to Megyn Kelly’s viral critique of our movie. As a passionate cinephile, I felt compelled to share my thoughts.
Kelly expressed her strong disapproval to her 3.4 million X followers, stating that she found the highly acclaimed film ‘Conclave’ deeply offensive and anti-Catholic. She criticized Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and director Edward Berger for their involvement in the production.
Kelly found the surprising conclusion of the movie disappointing, where it was disclosed that the recently elected Pope Vincent Cardinal Benitez (played by Carlos Diehz) was intersex. Fiennes’ character consents to conceal this revelation as the news of his election becomes public knowledge.
In her post, Kelly expressed her disappointment by stating, “The shocking twist at the end is that they’ve made THE POPE INTERSEX! I wish I had known this before watching it.” She further criticized the movie, saying that almost all characters lack any positive qualities and are morally questionable. The only exceptions are the intersex pope (who has female reproductive organs) and a cardinal who guards her secret. Kelly found this portrayal of Catholic Church secrets to be distasteful. She concluded by expressing her dismay that such a production was released on streaming platforms just before Christmas, and she feels it’s only Christians or Catholics who are subjected to mockery, belittlement, and disrespect in the media.
Though Straughan hadn’t personally listened to Kelly’s remarks, he disagreed with the assertion that the movie was “anti-Catholic.” In conversation with EbMaster during the Golden Globes press room, he expressed, “I don’t believe the film is anti-Catholic. I myself was raised Catholic and even served as an altar boy.
As a cinephile, let me express my interpretation of the movie ‘Conclave’: Its essence seems to revolve around the church’s constant quest for spiritual rejuvenation amidst the complexities of power dynamics. This delicate dance has always intrigued me, and I believe it’s a crucial aspect that the film explores. To put it simply, this is a theme deeply ingrained in my Catholic upbringing, a principle I wholeheartedly endorse.
Straughan adapted “Conclave” from the book of the same name by Robert Harris.
In a partnership with Eldridge, the parent company of EbMaster, known as PMC, also owns the production company behind the Golden Globes, Dick Clark Productions.
