As a firm believer in second chances and the transformative power of art, I am thrilled to see the San Quentin Film Festival bringing inspiring stories like “Four Letters” to light. The journey of software engineer Charles Anderson, as depicted in this documentary short, is a testament to the resilience and potential that lies within every individual, regardless of their past circumstances.
The inaugural San Quentin Film Festival, which is unique as it’s happening within a correctional facility, has expanded its schedule to include “Four Letters,” a brief documentary film. This production features music composed and served as an executive producer by the renowned artist, Common.
The festival represents the initial industry and media viewings for the movie “Four Letters,” yet its global debut occurred on screens within all California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation-managed prisons in April, during Second Chance Month – an initiative spearheaded by justice reform organization Prison Fellowship.
As a captivated admirer, I’d like to share my perspective on “Four Letters,” a compelling narrative that delves into the life of software engineer Charles Anderson. This gripping tale unfolds through his experiences before, during, and beyond imprisonment, offering a unique insight into his transformative journey – a journey that ascends from the grim realities of the criminal justice system to the lofty echelons of influential tech corporations worldwide.
The movie was orchestrated by Bao Nguyen, a director recognized for his works such as the 2024 documentary titled “The Greatest Night in Pop,” which focuses on the creation of the hit single “We Are the World,” and also for the 2020 documentary called “Be Water,” which revolves around Bruce Lee.
Executive producer Common collaborated on “Four Letters” with Tamara Brown, Brad Jenkins, and Calvin Williams. In addition to Common, other producers are Deepti Rohatgi, Marie Cisco, and Carolyn Mao. Meanwhile, David Schellhase, Mike Moffo, and Natrina Gandana functioned as consulting producers. The production was a joint effort with Stardust Films, Imagine Justice, Slack for Good, and Enfranchisement Productions. Karriem Riggens handled the film’s score composition alongside Common.
