
A student at the University of Tennessee is suing a dating app, alleging they used a TikTok video she created in advertisements without her consent. The ads promoted casual relationships, often referred to as ‘friends with benefits’.
Kaelyn Lunglhofer claims that Quantum Communications used her image and information in ads for their Meete app, falsely suggesting she was a potential romantic match to people nearby.
The lawsuit alleges that the advertisements used a video of the plaintiff’s graduation, accompanied by a voiceover asking if viewers wanted a casual relationship. It also claims the app promotes finding local women interested in having fun.
Student says she was “embarrassed” after seeing ad
Lunglhofer explained that she didn’t know about the advertisement until another student pointed it out to her after recognizing her in it.
She described the video as resembling an advertisement for a dating app with inappropriate content, according to local news station WATE.
She told WKRN in a video interview that she felt deeply embarrassed and that the situation was making her appear as though she was a sex worker. She described the experience as ‘horrible’.
The lawsuit claims the advertisements were shown to people in Knoxville, leading them to believe local women, like Lunglhofer, were using the platform.
Attorney Abe Pafford stated that his client is worried about someone potentially using her image or identity without permission.
Honestly, as a user, I was really disturbed to hear about how this app basically used a teenager without her knowledge to promote their product. It feels incredibly unethical to not get her consent and then use that to target ads at people around her, trying to trick them. It’s just a really low thing to do, and frankly, it’s one of the worst examples of this kind of behavior I’ve seen.
He explained that they would have readily used footage from a younger person – someone aged 17, 16, or even 15 – if it suited their needs.
Lunglhofer is requesting at least $750,000 in compensation. Court documents show that Meete has approximately 17 million users globally.
She said the lawsuit is about more than money and is intended to hold the company accountable.
“I don’t want anyone else to have to go through this,” Lunglhofer said.
