Colin Jost and Michael Che Host Stand-Ups in Peacock’s First Live Comedy Special: ‘If It’s a Disaster, We’ll Never Talk About It Again’

As a long-time follower of comedy and a dedicated Peacock subscriber, I must say that the live comedy special “Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark” was a delightful addition to my Thursday evening. The duo’s jabs at their own platform and the unpredictability of live comedy made it feel like an intimate gathering among friends – or perhaps, a lively night out in Brooklyn.

On Thursday night, Colin Jost and Michael Che from “Saturday Night Live” were chosen by NBCUniversal to perform the very first live comedy special on their streaming service, Peacock. In the opening act of this comedy hour, titled “Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark,” they made jokes about the novelty of the format and distribution platform for their show.

Tonight’s event is akin to a regular gathering with friends. If it turns out great, we might repeat it every couple of months. However, if it turns sour and becomes a catastrophe, we’ll never mention it again. And regardless of the outcome, we plan to record it. Jost commenced his performance at The Bell House in Brooklyn, saying, “We’re on Peacock! You all must be familiar with Peacock, right? You know Peacock from the expression, ‘I can’t believe they made us download this bloody Peacock.’

What’s going on with you, buddy? Did those checks bounce?” Jokingly asked Che. “That’s the kind of feeling we get when we venture into new places. We aimed to bring that experience to the nation… Is Peacock available throughout the country?

In a light-hearted manner, Jost expressed his aim for their event to be the second most humorous live show this week, trailing only behind the debate. Before moving on, he playfully mocked Trump’s disputed claim about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets by quipping, “There’s nothing more presidential than shouting, ‘They’re eating the cats and the dogs.’ I believe that was actually Thomas Jefferson.

One by one, an unexpected roster of comedians supported by Jost and Che made their way onto the stage, with Alex English, Aida Rodriguez, Aminah Imani, and Carlos Miller among the group. The evening’s finale featured Mike Birbiglia, a Emmy nominee, who started his act by engaging Jost in an impromptu question-and-answer session.

I’ve just sent a message to Colin inviting him for my show ‘Working It Out.’ Can you recall if you responded?” Birbiglia joked, taking a dig at the host. “Apparently not.

In addition to “Impractical Jokers” star Sal Vulcano, Sarah Sherman from “Saturday Night Live” was also present. She playfully teased Jost by saying, “This location is near my apartment, it seems like you didn’t abide by the restraining order.
