‘Colin From Accounts’ Stars on How That Messy Finale Wedding Proposal May or May Not Be Catastrophic

As a fan of heartwarming comedies that delve into the complexities of human relationships, I was thoroughly captivated by the second season of “Colin From Accounts.” The show masterfully explores the intricacies of its characters’ lives, particularly focusing on Gordon this time around. It’s refreshing to see a character in his 40s grappling with the consequences of past decisions and questioning his own worth – something many of us can relate to.

As the final episode of Season 2 for “Colin From Accounts” on Paramount+ titled “Speedy Susans” approaches, it seems that Gordon (played by Patrick Brammall) and Ashley (portrayed by Harriet Dyer) are in a relatively positive state – more emotionally than physically. To clarify, they’re not physically in a good place, but rather, they find themselves attending the wedding of Ashley’s best friend Megan (Emma Harvie) and her fiancé Rumi (Virginia Gay), who is known to have less-than-friendly feelings towards Gordon.

It’s alright that she’s struggling, as Ashley had her wisdom teeth removed. Despite being in pain, she still attempts to carry out her duties as Maid of Honor by applying a questionable spray tan to hide her swollen face. The day is tough for both, but things improve at the reception. In a sweet gesture, Gordon and Ashley express their love for each other for the first time, which seems to suggest that Season 2 will conclude on a hopeful note for them.

However, let’s pause for a moment. Inebriated by perhaps too much celebration, Gordon impulsively proposes to Ashley on the dance floor, in full view of everyone. It’s quite an uncomfortable scene when she’s clearly not prepared to agree and certainly not during her best friend’s wedding festivities. It’s like a sudden screeching halt, a blow to everything they have been building up over two seasons. Gordon attempts to dismiss it as a joke, but will they be able to move past this embarrassing incident?

Brammall and Dyer, both married co-creators of the series who also wrote every episode (with Dyer responsible for the finale), shared with EbMaster that they intentionally stopped the season at that point – leaving viewers questioning whether they could move past this and find humor in it, or if it was too devastating to recover from.

Dyer expresses that the potential outcome could be either mundane or significant. It could simply be another bump in the road, something they can move past with a ‘that was messy’ sentiment. However, it might also be transformative, leading to a chance for them to reconnect if they don’t overcome it.

At someone else’s wedding isn’t typically the ideal moment for proposing, but as Dyer points out, it held great emotional significance for Gordon. He had recently conversed with Ashley’s former boyfriend, who regretted his loss of her. In that instant, it dawned on Gordon that he didn’t wish to repeat that mistake. It had been an emotionally taxing period for Gordon, as his father had passed away in a previous episode, leaving him feeling exposed and vulnerable.

Originating from such a stunning location, if you’re Gordon and you’ve had a few drinks, and her ex claims that’s the one that escaped, and wouldn’t it be fortunate that she encountered your father before his demise… I believe he simply got overly excited,” Dyer expresses.

As it turns out, things might have taken a more dire turn. Interestingly, Brammall shares that an initial version of the episode concluded with an even grimmer outcome.

He describes a scene where they created a tableau of the two characters, and people were subtly dancing around them. The couple seemed to disappear within the crowd, giving off an impression of despair, as if their relationship was on the brink of failure. However, he felt it was overly somber in the end.

In the editing room, the team successfully inserted some cheerful instances and enhanced the overall positivity. Initially, a scene featuring Gordon and Ashley expressing their affection with “I love you” was removed, but fortunately, it was reinstated as well.

As a cinephile, I remember the tense moments when our studio executive from CBS wisely pointed out, ‘there seems to be a gap between Gordon and Ashley’s scenes.’ In response, we nervously questioned if it would be appropriate to reinstate that crucial missing scene. We were in such a fix, unsure of our next move.

Additionally, Dyer mentions another suggestion from Foxtel, a fellow Australian outlet, proposing that the show incorporate a “thumping real wedding tune following that scene to boost it.” Foxtel was prepared to cover the cost of the song. According to her, this is when they immediately turned to ABBA, as for Australians, ABBA and weddings are practically inseparable.

The selected tune was “Waterloo” by ABBA, fittingly so. It’s a lively track for a celebration, yet its title also mirrors the predicament, or their “Waterloo,” that Gordon and Ashley currently face.

Indeed,” Dyer replies. “We appreciated it for the same reason – it resonated deeply. It seemed to be a symbolic representation.

At the same time, the undecided ending has another important role: Brammall and Dyer aim that it might spark widespread interest and desire among fans for a Season 3.

According to Brammall, the ending was crafted for two reasons: amusement and strategically compelling our opponents’ actions. It seems to be effective as we haven’t received confirmation yet, but we’re quite certain. We plan to begin devising our next steps shortly.

The feedback for Season 2 of “Colin From Accounts” has not only equaled, but in numerous aspects, exceeded the positive response it received during its initial season. At present, Season 2 boasts a perfect “Certified Fresh” rating of 100% based on 20 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes; similarly, Season 1 holds a perfect score of 100% from 29 reviews as well.

In December 2022, “Colin From Accounts” premiered in Australia and quickly gained popularity, followed by an even larger success in the UK where it’s broadcast on BBC Two. The series eventually reached the U.S. through Paramount+ in November of last year. Initially, Brammall and Dyer portray two strangers who collide in a car accident that leaves a charming border terrier injured. Miraculously, the dog survives, but it now requires special care. Despite their differences (a 12-year age gap) and lack of common ground, both characters feel guilty about what happened to the dog. Gradually, they develop a bond over a shared, unwilling responsibility for the dog, whom they humorously nickname “Colin From Accounts.

Dyer explains that while Season 1 was about the question of whether they would, Season 2 delves into the question of should they have. It offers a deeper exploration of each character and their pasts, with more focus on Gordon this time around. Since we got to know Ashley’s family in Season 1, this season sheds light on who Gordon really is.

According to Brammall, “Why does this man in his 40s remain unmarried? His closets are filled with more baggage than hers. I believe the change in Season 1 to a more traditional romantic comedy structure has been replaced in Season 2 with a sense of freedom to explore their relationship dynamics more creatively. Essentially, the season revolves around her deciding whether or not to accept him.

Since “Colin From Accounts” has gained worldwide popularity, Brammall and Dyer were able to incorporate at least one amusing cameo. Interestingly, this was achieved by having Kevin Bacon appear in an episode, using the Cameo app. In this instance, he plays a character who is hired by Brett’s (Michael Logo) parents to deliver the news that they are evicting him from their home.

Bramhall collaborated with Kira Sedgwick, who is married to Bacon, on the television series “Call Your Mother.” Since then, the two pairs have continued to maintain a strong friendship.

When we came up with the plan for Brett’s parents to surprise him using Cameo and ask him to move out, our first thought was ‘let’s aim high’. Who is the most well-known person we could reach out to?” Brammall recalls. “He agreed instantly when we asked if he would be a part of a show that has been 100% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
