Previously, during and post the exceptional performance of The Penguin on HBO, most discussions about Colin Farrell primarily revolved around how drastically different he appeared beneath his Oz Cobb prosthetics. Some, however, preferred to focus on the dark essence of the character, as it was revealed that Oz had orchestrated a heinous crime – the staging of his own brothers’ drownings.
In a more straightforward manner: Was it fair for viewers to dislike Oz at the end of The Penguin’s near-perfect Season 1 finale, given all the goodwill he had earned through Victor’s tragic murder, Francis’ dire condition in prison, and his unsettling Oedipal interactions with Eve Karlo? This question may have different answers depending on whom you ask. Some believe that young Oz might not have been aware of the deadly consequences of his actions in the sewer tunnels, as argued by Farrell.
At an FYC panel for the acclaimed HBO series, as reported by Variety, Farrell openly shared his perspective on Oz confining his brothers within the storm’s fury out of envy. To quote him directly:
“During our FYC panel for this outstanding HBO show, I discussed my character’s actions when he imprisoned his brothers in the tempest out of jealousy.
He isn’t an architectural engineer; I believe he was unaware the water would reach such heights. You might need some heavy rainfall, like a monsoon, to cause the water to rise about 20 feet in a place that isn’t air-tight. [Laughs.] Let me explain what factors contribute to this phenomenon.
I’ve given this some thought several times since The Penguin aired, and it’s become clear to me that it’s hard to believe Oz was planning cold-blooded murder when he trapped his siblings in the tunnels. As an adult with experience in worst-case scenarios, I find it difficult to imagine the amount of water needed for drowning, so I can understand if Oz thought he was just scaring Jack and Benny, rather than endangering their lives.

I appreciate Colin Farrell for giving me reasons to ponder if Oz might not have deliberately killed his brothers as Francis and others suggest. I understand it’s a delicate matter, and it could easily lead to more complex questions without definitive answers. It appears to me that Oz might lack the intellectual capacity to carry out such an act intentionally, but this is just my personal interpretation.
Indeed, Oz’s actions following the incident didn’t exactly give an impression of genuine remorse for causing their deaths, whether intentional or accidental. In fact, Farrell humorously mentioned adopting a defensive posture when discussing Oz’s history, commenting that:
Indeed, I’m still struggling to defend him. It’s undeniable that his actions led to the demise of his brothers. However, he was an incredibly intricate individual.
An intriguing figure whose comeback fans are eagerly anticipating in “The Batman Part II,” slated for release in October 2027, is a character played by Colin Farrell. There’s also a possibility of more screen time for this crime lord in another TV season, extending his appearances beyond Matt Reeves’ film series. However, don’t count on me to vouch for him or feel compassion towards him when he returns – that might be asking too much. Likely so.
