Colin Farrell Complained on ‘The Penguin’ Set ‘That I F—ing Want It to Be Finished,’ Said After Wrapping: ‘I Never Want to Put That F—ing Suit on Again’

As a fan who’s been following Colin Farrell‘s career since his days in “Veronica Guerin,” I can understand his feelings about donning the Penguin suit again. The transformation into that infamous villain must be quite a toll, both physically and emotionally. It’s not just about burning cars, it’s about carrying the weight of a legacy that spans decades.

Colin Farrell expressed his doubts about reprising the role of Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, for a potential second season, stating that the intense emotional and physical transformation required to play the notorious Batman antagonist is quite demanding. Farrell initially appeared as the gangster in 2022’s “The Batman,” while the premiere of “The Penguin” series begins this month on HBO and Max.

Farrell admitted, ‘I’m not sure, buddy,’ but he made it clear that he enjoyed it immensely. However, as time went on, he found himself complaining to anyone who would listen about how much he wished it was over. He attempted to explain his feelings by saying he had a mix of gratitude and grumpiness towards the project. Despite this, he was still grateful for being a part of the legacy of that storytelling, as he grew up admiring Burgess Meredith in the ’60s TV series and Danny DeVito’s portrayal of the Penguin in ‘Batman Returns.’ By the end of it all, though…

He wasn’t acting recklessly without understanding his identity, setting cars ablaze, and so forth, but the combination of Matt Reeves’ creation, Lauren [LeFranc]’s vision as showrunner, and Mike [Marino]’s work in prosthetics and makeup was a truly impactful experience for him. Lauren asked, ‘If I could make sense of it, would you discuss it?’ To which he replied, ‘Definitely.’ He might have done so a year later, but upon completion, he declared, ‘I never want to wear that suit and that headgear ever again.’

Next year, I’ll once again don the iconic Penguin suit for “The Batman 2,” set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026. Director Matt Reeves recently revealed that my character will be a part of this sequel, and more intriguingly, that the narrative arc of “The Penguin” series directly sets the stage for the movie’s storyline he’s crafting. I can hardly wait!

Colin Farrell has been confirmed for the upcoming film about the return of the character Penguin. Reeves mentioned that they have collaborated with DC and the studio regarding the script, and everyone seems thrilled about it. Certain aspects of the storyline link directly to how the next movie unfolds, with Oz making an appearance as we transition the narrative back to Batman, who is currently investigating another case.

However, there’s a big difference between filming a movie and shooting a multi-episode season of television. So perhaps Farrell will be more inclined to suit up for “The Batman 2” than he is for “The Penguin” Season 2. “The Penguin’s” first season kicks off on Sept. 19.
