CoH3 Improves After Developers Gain Independence from Sega

As someone who has been following and playing Company of Heroes series since its inception, I must admit that the recent updates and events surrounding Relic Entertainment have left me both intrigued and concerned. The latest update 1.8 brings some promising changes, such as the addition of ambient sounds and new maps, which are always a delight for strategy game enthusiasts like myself.

It’s undeniable that Relic Entertainment is currently facing significant challenges. Not only has Company of Heroes 3 received unfavorable feedback from players, but a while ago, approximately 40 employees were let go. Despite these difficulties, the team persists in working on the strategy game, as evidenced by update 1.8, which offers new content and numerous improvements to the gameplay.

Company of Heroes 3 – Update 1.8 Changes

Just a few days past, our developers delved into the details of the latest update in a nearly hour-long presentation. Additionally, you can find a comprehensive rundown of this update on our official Real-Time Strategy (RTS) site. Here’s a summary of the key updates:

  1. Ambient sounds have been added to some maps (e.g. birds singing).
  2. Three new maps have been added: Road to Primosole (2 vs 2), Longstop Hill (3 vs 3), and Alam el Halfa (4 vs 4). The latter is the work of the gaming community.
  3. Improvements have been made to the quality of gameplay in multiplayer maps. The devs improved, for instance, the trenches on Gothic Line.
  4. From now on, it’s the player who decides about chat visibility. By default it is disabled.
  5. The interface has been improved, adjustments have been implemented to the multiplayer gameplay balance, and the AI has been modified to make enemies more eager to attack.

It’s worth mentioning that by March 2024, Relic Entertainment had ended its partnership with publisher Sega, who distributed the second and third versions of Company of Heroes. Since then, the studio has been operating independently.

Players are positive about the new patch, but activity is at a standstill

By examining the comments accompanying Relic’s announcement, it seems that fans of the third edition generally appear quite hopeful regarding the modifications presented. This optimism is echoed by Steam users who commended the developers on a skillfully done update and were particularly pleased with the addition of three new maps. Nonetheless, there are some less enthused voices raising concerns about forced chat shutdowns or issues that surfaced after installing the patch.

Following the launch of update 1.8, Company of Heroes 3 did not experience a notable surge in players. In the past 24 hours, the concurrent player count peaked at 3,209. To date, it has accumulated over 27,000 reviews, with only 54% of these being classified as “positive.
