Even though Activision continues to work on reducing cheating among Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 players, it still persists as a problem. However, there’s a glimmer of hope for Call of Duty enthusiasts now, as Phantom Overlay, one of the leading developers of cheats, has declared they will be closing down their operations.
According to Game Rant’s report, Phantom Overlay’s Telegram channel announced its intention to cease operations “right away.” However, they will keep the platform online for at least another month to deliver the 30-day keys that have already been purchased by players. Additionally, Phantom Overlay has promised a partial refund to those who bought lifetime keys.
The inventor of Phantom Overlay assured that it is not a scheme designed to defraud users by disappearing with their funds, and no outside force can pressure him into doing so. He promises to maintain the service securely and accessibly for an additional 32 days.
The post didn’t provide any details about why Phantom Overlay is shutting down, and it has sparked some doubt among online gamers. Given that Phantom Overlay effectively made money from Call of Duty hacks, it’s possible, though speculative, that the creator might attempt a comeback under a new business or pseudonym. As one user on X mentioned, Phantom Overlay’s cheats were widely known for being undetectable, while other cheat-makers have faced challenges in this area.
During a weekend last year, approximately 27,000 cheaters were prohibited in Call of Duty (CoD) due to Activision’s anti-cheat system, Ricochet. While Ricochet has outlined its aggressive strategy against cheating in CoD, it was noted that Activision fell short of their promise to ban cheaters from Black Ops. 6 ranked play as swiftly as anticipated earlier. In the past, Activision has taken legal action against developers of cheats and won a $3 million judgment against them. However, the ongoing struggle between Activision and the cheaters may persist, even if Phantom Overlay resurfaces under a different moniker. As an interim measure, Activision introduced Call of Duty: Recon Squad to gather player feedback.
