As a longtime fan of “The Karate Kid” franchise, I can only imagine the sheer joy and nostalgia that Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald must have felt when they were given the opportunity to expand upon this beloved universe with “Cobra Kai.” Having grown up watching Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and Billy Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence, I can only imagine the pressure and excitement these two writers faced as they embarked on this new journey.

The saga of “Cobra Kai” refuses to end…until it does. In part 1 of the last six episodes of “Cobra Kai,” the popular Netflix series based in the “Karate Kid” universe, the action reaches its peak as the characters prepare for the ultimate karate competition: Sekai Taikai.

Six members from Miyagi-Do’s karate team, including Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), Tory (Payton List), Samantha (Mary Mouser), Robby (Tanner Buchanan), Hawk (Jacob Bertrand), and Devon (Oona O’Brien), are the fortunate ones who get to participate in the world competition in Barcelona. The rest of the team will miss out on this opportunity and must contend with their disappointment by continuing to train and prepare for future competitions.

At the same time, Kreese (Martin Kove) and Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim) are preparing to join the Sekai Taikai with their formidable fighters from their Japanese team, Cobra Kai’s new generation. However, showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg hint that Miyagi-Do may face competition from other teams as well at the world championship.

“Cobra Kai,” initially released as an original YouTube production in 2018, follows up on the antagonists from the 1984 “Karate Kid” film. In this series, Ralph Macchio portrays Daniel LaRusso, now a prosperous car dealer with a family, while William Zabka reprises his role as Johnny Lawrence, who has struggled to move past his humiliating loss to Daniel during high school. Having ended up in the same area of the San Fernando Valley, they encounter each other again and, despite their vastly different circumstances, eventually develop an uneasy alliance. They now work together to instruct students at Miyagi-Do dojo, even as they continue to feud and argue.

Starting with its third season, the program shifted from YouTube to Netflix and experienced significant growth. In early 2023, Netflix revealed that Season 6 would be the finale. They later disclosed in May that this sixth season would consist of fifteen episodes, with the first half being released on November 15, and the second half set to stream at a later date.

As I sat down with Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg for an exclusive interview, the masterminds behind “Cobra Kai” opened up about their plans to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion on their own terms. They shared insights into the ongoing tension between Johnny and Daniel, teased what lies ahead for Tory as she reverts back to her old ways, and discussed their emotional farewell to the show after six thrilling seasons.

Has the show’s three-part structure with five episodes in each segment been part of the plan from the beginning? This is a new development.

Jon Hurwitz: Yes, that was our intention. After completing Season 5, we held discussions with Sony and Netflix regarding future plans. A standard season of ten episodes seemed insufficient for us to conclude the story effectively. We aimed for a satisfactory ending but wanted to ensure that all plotlines received a fitting conclusion.

Upon touching down on episode 15, it seemed intuitive for us to divide it into three sections, three chapters, or three acts. In our “Cobra Kai” scripting process, which included all previous seasons, we’d always have ten episodes. Yet, we’d compose the narrative up to a turning point, penning down the first five episodes. This experience was much like writing for this extended episode count of fifteen, allowing us more room to tell our story.

Were there any alternative conclusions for Part 1 besides wrapping it up in Barcelona at Sekai Taikai that you hadn’t decided on from the beginning?

Hayden Schlossberg: In Episode 5, things unfolded just as we had planned. Initially, our discussions with the writers focused on portraying the preseason in the first part. We wanted each segment to progress and become more significant. Therefore, it was logical for the early part of Season 6 to revolve around the preparations for Sekai Taikai. Just like any preseason, this period is filled with internal team drama, competition among teammates, and the camaraderie that forms as they get ready for upcoming challenges.

As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of martial arts and competitive training, I can tell you that the dynamic between our characters in this show is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Up until now, they’ve been rivals, each honing their skills at opposing dojos. But as they prepare to face off against each other in Barcelona, the stakes are higher than ever.

If I’m following correctly, you’re asking about what comes next if we’ve already reached the World Tournament (Sekai Taikai). Is the second group of five fighters going to participate in another tournament?

The second part of the story unfolds at the Barcelona tournament, which is unlike any other All-Valleys competition you’ve seen before in “The Karate Kid” films and “Cobra Kai.” As Mike Barnes explains in Episode 4, this tournament pushes contestants to their limits and beyond. It’s an extreme challenge with a dark history – past participants have even lost their lives.

In the writers’ room, we brainstormed ideas for new conflicts and unique elements to make our team building experience in Barcelona exciting and engaging. The atmosphere was filled with creativity and drama as we debated and discussed various possibilities. Barcelona was the backdrop for intense debates and numerous disagreements, adding to the excitement of our collaborative endeavor.

In the exciting world of Cobra Kai, their training reaches far and wide to challenge our Miyagi-Do kids. But here’s the twist: There are fourteen other teams involved! The thrill lies in witnessing diverse teams from around the globe, broadening our perspective that it’s not just about Cobra Kai or Miyagi-Do. The competition is fierce with numerous skilled fighters. We’ve recruited several real-life world champions to bring authenticity to their roles. For instance, Brandon H. Lee, who portrays Kwan, is a genuine world karate champion. You’ll encounter more of these exceptional athletes in the upcoming episodes.

As a big fan of the “Karate Kid” franchise, I couldn’t help but be thrilled when I saw Sean Kanan reappear on the latest installment. His performance brought back fond memories of watching the original films in my childhood. Regarding your question, based on my enthusiasm for this series and the excitement generated by the unexpected return of a beloved character, I certainly hope that other familiar faces from the “Karate Kid” universe will make a comeback in the upcoming parts. The thought of seeing more iconic figures from this classic saga is truly exhilarating!

Josh Heald: We cannot confirm who, but yes, there’s at least one more “Karate Kid” legacy cast member coming back for the next couple of parts.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve always been intrigued by the complex dynamic between Johnny and Daniel in the “Karate Kid” series. Their rivalry has been a central theme throughout the storyline, yet in an unexpected turn of events, they joined forces for what appeared to be a common goal. It was a fascinating shift, making me realize that their relationship was more intricate than just a simple rivalry. I’m curious, how did the creators strike a balance between keeping them at odds while allowing them to collaborate for this crucial tournament?

The dynamic between their characters in the writers’ room is something that continues to develop. We aim for it to progress in a way that feels authentic and not repetitive. The one consistent aspect is their profoundly contrasting viewpoints. They make an intriguing pair, and this discrepancy will always cause friction. However, the real question lies in how they handle and resolve these conflicts.

At the close of Season 3, their unity was put to the test as soon as Season 4 began. In this current season, we intended for them to make an effort to remain united. However, by the end of Episode 5, their contrasting beliefs were bound to create friction. Yet, they didn’t want to separate because the children’s well-being was paramount. It was much like a troubled marriage entering its second year, where they stayed together for the sake of the kids, but the passion had faded.

And so the question is: Can that spark be rekindled in Barcelona?

What viewers truly hope for is that the two characters will eventually become friends and maintain their friendship. Has it been challenging to sustain their ongoing conflict?

We arrange circumstances for them that inevitably cause clashes. In the initial five episodes, they were making preparations for the Sekai Taikai with good intentions. However, these are two individuals who have distinct backgrounds and experiences in life.

John views the Sekai Taikai as a chance for him to realize his long-held aspiration: becoming a sensei with his own dojo and thriving in that role. With his newfound family, he’s eager to embark on this next stage of life by pursuing his dream career.

Daniel owns several car dealerships and is financially prosperous. It’s not merely a pastime for him, as it holds significant importance in his life, enabling him to apply Mr. Miyagi’s teachings that have greatly influenced him. Both men harbor distinct objectives and convictions, yet they are united in their goal of preparing the children for the tournament. Their contrasting viewpoints gave rise to an organic conflict, which we will explore further as the season progresses. Despite their differences, they share compassionate hearts. The challenge lies in whether they can truly reconcile and find lasting harmony.

In the show, many characters have undergone transformations that allow them to make amends for past mistakes. Among them is Johnny. But could there be a chance for Kreese to do the same and seek forgiveness?

Heald: There’s always a possibility, but Kreese is a tough nut to crack. Taking Johnny on his journey, we always talked about taking him not from a one to a 10, but more like a one to a two. Kreese is worse. Kreese is the dark side: He’s always been the Darth Vader of this series.

Can there be any redemption for Kreese’s cold heart? Or is this the start of an irreversible descent into darkness?

Where is Terry Silver? Will we see him this season?

Terry Silver is out of the picture in the Karate Wars game by the end of Season 5. It’s uncertain if he will make an appearance again or not. The only thing we know for sure is that he has the means to come back if he chooses to. For the past two seasons, Terry Silver posed a significant danger, but currently, we prefer exploring new antagonists as the story unfolds in Barcelona.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be taken aback when Tory made the surprising return to Cobra Kai. I wonder what thought process led him to make such a decision.

Writing for Tory’s storyline this season was an exciting experience for us. Her character is fiery and defensive, entering the show as if she were a wild animal ready to attack. We’ve enjoyed exploring her role as a competitor against Sam, a romantic interest for Robbie, and a part of their complex love and karate triangles. It’s been fulfilling to see her evolution by Season 6, where her rivalry has faded but left behind intriguing mysteries about what lies ahead.

“Why did she make that choice? I wish it hadn’t been that way. Is there any chance for her redemption?”

In Part 2, we’ll resume with an intriguing point that serves as a fresh beginning. She’s shifted over to the other side, an evolution that feels authentic and is easy to empathize with. This transition creates significant investment in the outcomes for all parties involved.

There’s an upcoming “Karate Kid” movie – are the events in “Cobra Kai” linked to those at all?

In the “Cobra Kai” series, there are currently no interconnected storylines with the “Karate Kid” films or any other movies. This is an example of independent storyline progression within the “Karate Kid” universe. When we began developing “Cobra Kai,” the Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith film had already been produced. The only connection lies in Daniel LaRusso’s presence in the upcoming “Karate Kid” movie. We’re eager to witness how another filmmaker brings this character to life and expands upon that aspect of the universe.

The production of this show has had an extensive history, transitioning from YouTube to Netflix, and currently running for six consecutive years. Can you share some insights about the last days of filming?

The last days on set were filled with strong emotions. The show had run for six seasons, but we’d all been a part of it for nearly seven years. It was an intense journey with its fair share of highs and lows for many cast members and crew, including those who joined us back in 2017. By the time we reached 2024, we had spent almost two entire high school eras together, making it a deeply emotional experience.

Despite feeling sad about the ending of Cobra Kai, there’s a sense of excitement and pride among us that the story will continue in some form. Be it spin-offs, reunions, or simple dinners together, we’re all connected by this journey. Ending the series on our own terms was emotional but rewarding – a rare feat for shows lasting six seasons. We accomplished something positive, leaving us with a bittersweet feeling.

Xolo Maridueña has been a part of this production from the very start – the show essentially took shape around him and Billy Zabka. I’m curious, how was it bidding farewell to everyone, and what was it like collaborating with the team during those final days?

I’m thoroughly impressed with Xolo’s transformation. He was always a fine young man, but seeing him bloom into an excellent actor has been a delight. Previously, I would describe him as a “good kid,” given his endearing role in the show and the affection he garnered from both the audience and Johnny. Witnessing his self-assurance expand has been an enjoyable experience. Observing him excel beyond the series, particularly as “Blue Beetle,” was truly captivating.

We also see the friendships amongst the kids, and how they’ve grown. The closeness between him and Jacob Bertrand and Gianni DeCenzo, who we put those three together at a lunch table, and now they’re all really good friends and have been for a very long time. It’s really great to see a group of young people that started the show as good kids that were eager to learn, and to have such great mentors and role models in our legacy cast like Ralph Macchio, Billy Zabka, Martin Kove, Thomas Ian Griffith and more.

For seven years, these youngsters have been fortunate enough to learn from genuine professionals who are not only skilled but also kind-hearted and supportive of one another. Their positive traits have continued to flourish, making them remarkable individuals and exceptional performers. We’ve had the pleasure of observing their transformation since they were teenagers, or even younger, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating with them and building lasting relationships.

What would be the next dream spinoff for you all?

Schlossberg expressed that there are numerous potential spin-offs for this series, some of which we have given more thought to than others. However, we are deeply attached to the characters of this universe. We cherish those we inherited from the original show and those we have developed ourselves. We ponder over each character’s backstory and consider possible continuations from Season 6. Additionally, we brainstorm creative ways to carry on the characters’ stories while also finding methods to preserve Johnny’s humor in some capacity.

We discuss various scenarios for these beloved characters as writing for them brings us joy. The decision to conclude the series came intuitively, as each season surpassed the previous one, reminiscent of the “Rocky” films in the 1980s. However, reaching this global stage presents a risk, and pushing beyond it might result in a significant decline, similar to a shark jumping out of the water.

But you could just do exactly what we did with “Cobra Kai,” which is take a character from “The Karate Kid” and just delve into their story. We talk about that with every single character. The question for us is: What is that going to be? We’re hoping that we get a lot of different opportunities to tell more stories.
