CNN’s Live ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Telecast Spurs Special Coverage

CNN is unlikely to air live broadcasts of events like the Super Bowl or Oscars. Instead, they’re planning to create a primetime event by live-streaming the Broadway play “Good Night, and Good Luck” at 7 p.m., with additional coverage related to the show’s theme about journalists challenging power filling in before and after the broadcast.

George Clooney’s Broadway performance as Edward R. Murrow, being covered live by CNN for the first time ever on Broadway, will be aired without commercial breaks and can be streamed online without a subscription on CNN.com. Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown will lead the special live coverage for this unique event, which is supported by Warner Bros. Discovery. The network claims that this is a groundbreaking approach as live Broadway shows have never been broadcast in such a manner before.

Clearly, CNN anticipates that their broadcast will strike a chord with those who appreciate journalism, particularly at a time when numerous mainstream news outlets are facing challenges under the Trump administration. Several notable media organizations such as NPR, PBS, and The Walt Disney Company have been embroiled in legal disputes or face potential obstacles to receiving essential funding.

6:30 p.m. eastern time will bring you live, on-site coverage outside the Winter Garden Theatre, where Brown will be present. Accompanying her will be Brian Stelter, CNN’s lead media analyst, and Harry Enten, who will engage with the audience prior to the show.

After the performance concludes, Cooper will lead a live program titled “Good Night, and Good Luck: Truth and Power,” where he’ll delve into the show’s making and the current landscape of international journalism, with an audience made up of aspiring journalists looking on.

Journalist Scott Pelley, who works for the “60 Minutes” program, will participate in discussions about the enduring impact of Edward R. Murrow. In several aspects, Pelley’s life mirrors the narrative he is part of. Notably, CBS News, which includes Anderson Cooper among its correspondents, is currently under review by CBS News’ parent company, Paramount Global. This corporation is attempting to negotiate a sale to Skydance Media, all while President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against “60 Minutes” following an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris of the United States.

Cooper will be accompanied by a group that includes CNN’s Abby Philip, veteran Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, former CBS News anchor Connie Chung, author and biographer Walter Isaacson, New York Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens, technology journalist and podcaster Kara Swisher, as well as Mavin Kalb – one of Murrow’s last journalists at CBS News.
