Clint Eastwood Complained That Studios “Wouldn't Consider Him for Parts”. That Changed When He Starred in the $10M Movie

As a dedicated fan, I find it fascinating to delve into the intriguing journey of Clint Eastwood, a man who defied the odds and etched his name in the annals of cinema history. The Dollars Trilogy, while undeniably successful, was not the key that unlocked the doors of Hollywood for him. Instead, it was the American western Hang ‘Em High that proved to be his golden ticket, despite earning less at the box office than the iconic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

It might come as a shock nowadays, but despite the success and popularity of the Dollars Trilogy, Clint Eastwood did not find it propelled him significantly in Hollywood. According to Eastwood himself, their foreign origin was the issue. In LA, success elsewhere apparently held little weight, hence he still needed to prove himself to gain recognition from the studios there.

In a New York Times interview, the actor openly acknowledged that there’s a negative perception towards actors who work primarily on TV and those who produce movies in Europe. This has undeniably added complexity to his career path within the entertainment industry.

Despite the fact that my previous three artworks had proven profitable, I found myself overlooked when it came to acting roles. However, once ‘Hang ‘Em High’, a production filmed here, gained traction, the offers began pouring in.

Due to his part in the American western “Hang ‘Em High,” his circumstances significantly improved. Although the film’s box office earnings of $10 million paled in comparison to “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” which grossed an impressive $38 million, the lesser success was still sufficient to set Eastwood’s career alight in the United States. From that point onwards, studios started reaching out to him with acting offers, propelling his career forward.

However, it is the “Dollars Trilogy” films that continue to be most iconic in Eastwood’s cinematic career. His decision to participate in European productions, despite facing prejudice in Hollywood, proved shrewd. Nowadays, there can be no doubt about his filmmaker status, having left an indelible mark on both American and European cinema.
