As a seasoned moviegoer with a penchant for high-octane action flicks and a soft spot for reboots that breathe new life into beloved classics, I find myself rather intrigued by this fresh take on “Cliffhanger.” The creative overhaul, the shift in lead roles, and the star-studded ensemble cast have certainly piqued my interest.
The remake of the iconic action movie “Cliffhanger” by Sylvester Stallone is now being produced, however, the final product will have significant differences compared to the original plan that was revealed approximately 18 months prior.
Instead of Sylvester Stallone, Lily James will headline the upcoming project, with Pierce Brosnan joining her as co-star. Originally slated to be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Jaume Collet-Serra (“Carry-On,” “Non-Stop”) has taken over the director’s chair instead. The script is penned by Mark Bianculli, and the production comes from Rocket Science in collaboration with Thank You Pictures and Supernix.
Filming is currently happening in Austria with an exciting ensemble cast that includes: Nell Tiger Free (from “Servant” and “The First Omen”), Franz Rogowski (who won acclaim for “Passages”), Shubham Saraf (“Shantaram”), Assaad Bouab (“Franklin”), Suzy Bemba (“Poor Things”) and Bruno Gouery, who gained popularity from the Netflix series “Emily in Paris.
The fresh screenplay is inspired by a narrative penned by Ana Lily Amirpour. Those in the loop about this production have compared it to “Die Hard,” but with a unique twist: a tale of father and daughter.
In this storyline, Pierce Brosnan takes on the role of experienced mountaineer Ray Cooper, who runs a high-end chalet in the Dolomites alongside his daughter Sydney. During a visit with a wealthy businessman’s son, they fall victim to a group of kidnappers. Tragically, another daughter of Ray’s, Naomi (portrayed by James), is still traumatized from a previous mountaineering accident and witnesses the attack. To rescue her family, Naomi is compelled to confront her past fears and battle for survival.
Lars Sylvest from Thank You Pictures, Joe Neurauter of Supernix, and Thorsten Schumacher from Rocket Science will collaborate with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe on the production.
Filming our movie on-site in the Dolomites with high-end cameras was essential for us to convey the vastness and grandeur of our story. We aim to provide viewers with an exhilarating and immersive cinematic experience that’s second to none,” stated Serra in a press release. “Lily, in particular, has gone above and beyond for her role, undergoing rigorous training and learning to climb. Her dedication has enabled us to capture breathtaking shots we wouldn’t have managed otherwise, and the entire team is astonished by her determination.
The suspenseful movie titled “Cliffhanger” is planning for a theatrical debut. Rocket Science will be responsible for selling it internationally, while CAA Media Finance will handle distribution in North America and China. Rocket Science has a collaborative deal with Studiocanal regarding the film’s rights.
Amirpour and Collet-Serra serve as executive producers. Chance Wright from Wright Productions, along with Gianluca Chakra and Hisham Alghanim of Front Row Entertainment, are joint investors and executive producers. Josef Brandmaier, Jeff Most, Katy Most, and Matthew Stedman represent Level Field Media Finance as executive producers. Philipp Kreuzer serves as executive producer for Supernix.
As a movie critic, I’d rephrase it this way: “This independent film is a testament to collaborative filmmaking, boasting a host of executive producers. Among them are Kwesi Dickson and Jay Taylor from Electric Shadow, MTG and Rodrigo Tarazona, Robert Daly Jr. and David Lipper from Latigo Films, and Kevan van Thompson for Capfilms. James herself will serve as an executive producer through her banner Parodos Productions, in partnership with Gala Gordon. Hungarian Hero Squared, Jonathan Halperyn and Daniel Kresmery, along with Jazmyn Tanski, are also co-producing this project.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that James is managed by UTA, Tavistock Wood, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern; similarly, Brosnan is represented by powerhouses like CAA, Viewpoint, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox. Lastly, Collet-Serra is associated with LBI Entertainment and a prestigious team that includes Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.
Individually Talented is associated with Rogowski at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), B-Side Management, and Agentur Hobrig; Kumar is managed by Insight Management & Production and Circle M+P; Bouab is under Chalcot Sq Arts & Media Management; and Bemba and Gouery are represented by United Agents.
