Clayster coaching Vegas Falcons is the perfect job for the Call of Duty legend

As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of Call of Duty under my belt, I’ve witnessed legends come and go, but few have left as lasting an impact as James ‘Clayster’ Eubanks. His retirement was a bittersweet moment, but his decision to join the Vegas Falcons as a coach has me genuinely excited for what the future holds.

On November 14, exactly a month before the commencement of the 2025 Call of Duty League season, the Vegas Falcons team made an announcement: they were welcoming COD veteran James ‘Clayster’ Eubanks into their coaching staff. For this three-time world champion, it could be the ideal initial step in his post-playing career.

On October 23, it was announced that Clayster has formally stepped down from competitive Call of Duty (COD) play, joining the ranks of some of the most esteemed and honored players in the COD history, including Ian ‘Crimsix’ Porter and Seth ‘Scump’ Abner.

After retiring, there were many discussions about what Clay might choose to do next. Given that he’s worked as a desk analyst during events where he didn’t qualify, and he seemed to fit seamlessly with the more experienced professionals, many speculated that he might pursue a similar career path.

Some people thought he might delve into creating content, whereas others foresaw him pursuing a coaching position – albeit few predicted he’d wind up with the Falcons, the fresh team in town.

The Falcons declared they’d assume the Las Vegas Legion Call of Duty League position following the 2024 season, and furthermore disclosed that they would be moving their Challengers squad based in Saudi Arabia to join them – staying loyal to the team that demonstrated progress in amateur tournaments across Europe last year.

Despite doubts about Clay joining a team expected to rank among the top 12 with limited growth potential, this role could indeed be ideal for him if he’s genuinely aiming to excel as a coach, for several key reasons.

The exceptional one is about to join the Falcons! 🦅

Warmly welcoming @Clayster to the Las Vegas Falcons team! 🔥

He’ll be joining our ranks as part of the coaching crew.

The only way is up

Initially, it’s important to note that predictions should wait until matches begin, but it seems quite possible that the Falcons might find themselves at the bottom of the league this season. This isn’t an insult to them; they are fully aware of the perceptions about their team and understand they’ll be facing players with extensive league experience.

However, this setup suits Clay exceptionally well since it provides him with an excellent base for further growth. A quartet of players, on the verge of realizing their shared dream, already demonstrate strong camaraderie – all he needs to do is share his wealth of experience accumulated over more than a decade, and nothing but progress awaits them.

He has the ability to shape them precisely into the players required, significantly altering their career paths within the league.

If Clayster manages to assist teams in climbing the rankings, he will quickly become a sought-after and esteemed coach within Call of Duty. Notably, the stress associated with his performance would be significantly less compared to if he joined powerhouses like OpTic Texas or Atlanta FaZe, considering their already high expectations.

Clay’s way

As a fervent admirer, let me share my perspective on how Clay’s coaching journey is evolving: This experience seems to be helping him discover his unique coaching style, a process that I believe will continue as he experiments with methods that resonate and those that don’t.

It’s more demanding for him since the team’s circumstances make it a tougher task compared to starting with a team that was already successful and where he already has strong connections with the players.

Following the announcement on his Twitch stream, Clay expressed: “Working with individuals who may not know me too well yet, but still hold some respect for my achievements in Call of Duty, should make coaching them a bit simpler. They’re more likely to heed my advice. However, I must be more cautious with my words. I need to ensure I’m not just talking carelessly. I need to make certain that when I do speak, the information I share is accurate.

Clayster accepted the Falcons’ coaching position not just for financial reasons, but primarily because it presented an excellent opportunity.

He added that he has “basically coached all his teams” over the last couple of years anyway just while playing, but this obviously presents a new challenge and exactly the kind he was looking for.

Although some may criticize or doubt Clay’s decision, upon considering the situation and the potential it offers, it becomes clear that this move could potentially be an ideal progression for Clay.

Now, only time will tell whether he can become one of the (very few) great coaches in Call of Duty.
