Classic Xbox Live hit Castle Crashers getting new DLC 17 years later

17 years after its initial launch, the beloved indie game Castle Crashers – initially popular on Xbox Live Arcade – continues to receive updates, preparing for the arrival of fresh DLC content.

During the peak popularity of the Xbox 360, there was no equivalent to Xbox Live Arcade. This platform introduced us to captivating games such as Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy, Limbo, and let’s not forget Doritos Crash Course!

Among the top-selling games released on XBLA, none were more celebrated than Castle Crashers, created by The Behemoth in 2008. This side-scrolling beat ’em up game offered an experience we hadn’t encountered before, with a unique system of progression that kept players coming back for more. Each playthrough promised the discovery of new weapons or the unlocking of stronger characters.

After more than 20 million copies sold, it’s clear that Castle Crashers continues to be a popular choice among gamers. In fact, developers are still focusing on

New Castle Crashers DLC on the way 17 years on from release

Over time, Castle Crashers has been expanded with numerous DLC packages, introducing fresh characters, environments, weaponry, and innovative features. After a span of 17 years, another premium upgrade is imminent, offering a high degree of personalization options.

Known as the Painter Boss Paradise update, Castle Crashers players will soon be able to play as Paint Junior, using artistic weapons to defeat enemies. Not only that, but every existing character and weapon is set to receive new artwork, but that’s far from the main selling point.

The unique feature that distinguishes this new DLC lies in its character customization toolkit. For the initial time, Castle Crashers gamers are now able to import their personal sketches, crafting their ideal character according to their imagination.

With an existing template, enthusiasts can craft their ideal Castle Crasher, including creating unique weapons for combat purposes.

The game will be released on August 6, 2025, exactly 6,161 days after its initial launch. The price will be set at $3.99 USD, but keep in mind that there’s a special condition attached to it.

The character creator expansion pack is only available on PC via Steam Workshop right now, and there’s been no hint yet about a possible console launch in the future.
