Renowned French filmmaker, Claire Denis, is deep in negotiations for the directorial role of a gritty, cannibalistic crime story titled “The Soap Maker.
The proposed project, currently being marketed at Berlin’s EFM, is a modern adaptation of Mauro Bolognini’s 1977 cult film “Gran Bollito.” In this movie, Shelley Winters played the role of a serial killer who used her victims’ remains to create soap, cake, and cookies.
The movie portrayed in English is based on the real-life events surrounding Leonarda Cianciulli from Italy, who, during the late 1930s and early 1940s, brutally killed three local women residing in Correggio, central Italy. She disposed of their remains using chemicals, and subsequently used the leftovers to create items such as soaps, candles, baked goods like cookies and cakes, which she distributed among her community members.
I, a follower of the creative industry, am referring to the project titled “The Soap Maker.” This production, spearheaded by Gerry Pass through his Chrome Entertainment label based in both Los Angeles and New York, is currently being prepared for distribution. It has been presented to potential buyers at the European Film Market (EFM). However, CAA chose not to provide any comments regarding this matter.
The upcoming project is being characterized as a gritty, high-tension crime drama reminiscent of “Silence of the Lambs,” “Seven,” and “Get Out.” It carries a heavy, ominous atmosphere and has elements of a psychological thriller. The intention is to film “The Soap Maker” on location in Italy.
In addition to owning the rights to Bolognini’s “Gran Bollito” screenplay, the producers also possess rights to a diary that Leonarda Cianciulli is said to have written while in a psychiatric prison following her confession of crimes. The project’s promotional materials suggest that the peculiar witchcraft methods Leonarda used to lure her victims will be accurately portrayed based on her asylum diary.
Denis, renowned for her impressive collection of acclaimed films such as “Beau Travail” (1999), “Trouble Every Day” (2001), “35 Rhums” (2009), winner of the Berlin Silver Bear “Both Sides of the Blade” (2022) and Cannes Grand Prix winner “Stars at Noon,” is preparing to film her next project, “The Cry of the Guards.” This upcoming production will feature Tom Blyth (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”), Mia McKenna-Bruce, Matt Dillon, and Isaach De Bankolé.
Besides Pass, the upcoming horror film “The Hermit” starring Lou Ferrigno and Malina Weissman is being produced by Lucas Foster (known for “Ford v Ferrari” and “Crimson Tide”) and Salvatore Sclafani. The latter also directed “The Hermit” and manages production company First Child, where the film is being made.
