As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but be thoroughly intrigued by Sandfall Interactive’s upcoming RPG title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The latest revelations from director Guillaume Broche about the game’s inspirations have only heightened my anticipation.

During the ongoing production process of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Sandfall Interactive, director Guillaume Broche has shared sources of motivation behind this much-awaited role-playing game’s creation. By taking cues from renowned RPGs, players can expect an engaging experience filled with excitement.

At the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 left a lasting impression. The audience response to the presentation was overwhelmingly positive. Beyond its captivating French Belle Epoque fantasy design and intriguing apocalyptic storyline, what truly grabbed everyone’s attention in the trailer was the engaging and meticulously crafted turn-based combat system.

Guillaume Broche, director at Sandfall Interactive, shared with PlayStation Blog his team’s deep commitment to both the stunning visuals and engaging turn-based gameplay that has generated immense interest among potential players. To create this captivating experience, the developers drew significant inspiration from renowned RPG series in the genre.

Drawing inspiration from dynamic action games such as Souls, Devil May Cry, and NieR, we aimed to incorporate their engaging gameplay mechanics into a turn-based format…In these games, players must master the enemies’ attack patterns, timing, and weaknesses for each encounter, and our goal was to recreate that level of strategy and challenge in a new genre.

In the reveal trailer, you can clearly see the impact of games known for their engaging and dynamic combat, specifically their focus on smooth, significant, and absorbing battles. Leveraging Unreal Engine 5’s advanced technology, these captivating aspects are seamlessly integrated with a turn-based system that is equally polished and gratifying.

Broche drew inspiration from various sources for her work. Notably, she mentioned the Final Fantasy series, Lost Odyssey, and particularly Persona, admiring their “impressive user interface, rhythm, and moving cameras.” In addition to video games, Broche sought inspiration from other realms. A French fantasy novel titled “La Horde du Contrevent” and the popular anime/manga “Attack on Titan” were among her discoveries that left a profound impact.

I’ve always found stories where characters bravely explore the unfamiliar despite immense dangers, such as in the anime/manga Attack on Titan, to be particularly captivating.
