As a seasoned RPG enthusiast who’s been through countless adventures since the days of the NES, I can’t help but be thoroughly intrigued by the latest glimpse into Clair Obscur Expedition 33. The footage released by Sandfall Interactive has me itching for my old controller like nothing else in recent memory.
Although Clair Obscur Expedition 33 won’t be available until 2025, Sandfall Interactive has shared an exciting sneak peek by posting a gameplay video on their YouTube channel today. The short clip offers us the closest look yet at what we can anticipate from the final version of the game.
In this game, we’re introduced to one of the initial explorable regions called Flying Waters. It’s visually breathtaking, reminiscent of a fairy tale like Wonderland. Our protagonist, Gustave from Expedition 33, along with Lune, embark on a quest to find their lost teammate Maelle. During their journey, they encounter the silent remains of survivors from Expedition 68, a group presumed to have sought the same mission decades earlier to combat the Paintress.
Right after, I found myself stepping into a typical battle scenario in this game, mainly focusing on random encounters. As I cautiously moved towards an opponent named Luster, the scene transitioned to a turn-based combat sequence, evoking nostalgia of classic RPGs with similar mechanics. Even the ‘First Strike’ bonus was there, rewarding me for successfully surprising the enemy before they could react.
In the heat of the fight, it’s clear that Gustave employs an intriguing fighting technique – he dual-wields a pistol and a sword, seamlessly integrating attacks from both weapons, plus his robotic limb. On the other hand, Lune appears to be a spellcaster character, deploying various elements in her assaults against adversaries. The PlayStation Blog also emphasizes the application of the Free Aim system, enabling players to target enemy vulnerable spots.
In this game, strategic attacks take place in a sequence where you can plan your moves, but dodging, parrying, and counterattacks happen instantly when an enemy strikes. You’ll find separate buttons for these actions, and timing is crucial to avoid damage. Additionally, there are opportunities for counterattacks, as Gustave executes one to conclude the battle. The outcome of each fight is shown, detailing XP earned by each character and the “Battle Loot” obtained.
Additional video evidence demonstrates Maelle re-entering the group and employing a functional hook mechanism to navigate tall areas in the setting. A fight with a boss named Goblu showcases her combat style, where she swings a rapier sword and employs elemental powers. Some of these moves necessitate pressing a particular sequence of buttons (as shown previously), and the highest damage is inflicted when executed flawlessly.
In summary, although there are many aspects of the backstory for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that remain unknown, it’s become evident that the game’s combat system has been meticulously designed. It boasts a diverse and adaptable set of mechanics that function seamlessly, yet still enables players to tailor their strategies according to their preferences.
