Civilization 7 Won't Require 2K Launcher On PC

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen the evolution of the Civilization series since its inception, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and anticipation about the upcoming Civilization VII. The removal of the 2K launcher from Civilization VI on Steam is not just a technical fix; it’s a testament to Firaxis’ commitment to improving the gaming experience for their community.

In simpler terms, the tech tree in Sid Meier’s Civilization series is being updated. This change is happening because the controversial 2K launcher will not be required for Civilization VII when it releases in 2025. Also, the launcher has been taken out of Civilization VI on Steam as of this week.

As a dedicated fan, I eagerly checked out the latest update on Steam’s Civilization VI page, yet found no detailed insights into what’s new. However, it’s been a challenging few months for me as a player, with the 2K launcher encountering technical issues that have necessitated hotfixes in both June and July.

As a gamer, I’ve encountered hiccups with the 2K Launcher before, and it seems that back in 2022, Marvel’s Midnight Suns players on Steam discovered that simply disabling this launcher could resolve some technical issues related to frame rate performance. The response on the Civilization subreddit was incredibly positive when the news broke out.

Civilization VII was officially unveiled at Summer Game Fest a couple of months ago. The strategy game will arrive next year at the same time on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Take-Two originally revealed that Firaxis was working on a new entry in the Civilization franchise in early 2023. At that time, XCOM’s Jake Solomon left the developer after directing Midnight Suns.

In the meantime, Civilization VI was launched in the year 2016. If you’d like to learn more about it, feel free to read TopMob’s review of Civilization VI.
