Firaxis Games Studio has revealed that they plan to unveil Patch 1.2.0 for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on April 22 (subject to change). As previously communicated, this update will introduce several new features and enhancements. The studio is open about the fact that numerous modifications have been made based on player feedback, and they invite the community to continue offering their insights.
Most important updates in version 1.2.0
Among the significant updates in version 1.2.0 is the incorporation of ten fresh resources into the game, adding depth to your gaming experience through engaging storyline events. Furthermore, we’re introducing a novel random resource distribution mechanism that promises to make each play session unique.
The developers plan to incorporate a mechanism called “Hemisphere Identity” in the game. This means that certain resources, particularly Treasure Resources, will be found only on specific hemispheres or continents. This feature is designed to motivate players to delve deeper and explore more areas of the game world. Additionally, Treasure Resources will now grant passive abilities.
Population growth
The new growth formula for the population will make it develop more smoothly throughout the game, even during later ages, as stated in the developers’ announcement. Previously, reaching a high rural population level could take a long time and involve many turns, but Firaxis Games has addressed this issue. These adjustments are expected to be particularly appreciated by players who focus on factions that rely heavily on food production, such as Pachacuti. The changes were made based on player feedback.
One More Turn – endless game mode
As previously mentioned, Civi 7 will introduce an additional gameplay feature – “Just One More Turn…”. This optional mode enables players to prolong their campaign beyond the end of the modern age. Although new victory options can no longer be obtained and the progression through ages ceases, you’re still able to complete any remaining victory paths, view cutscenes, and continue exploring your empire.
Team mode
In the upcoming 1.2.0 version, we’ll reintroduce the traditional team play mode, a feature familiar from past games in the series. Team members in this setup will now collaborate by sharing:
- map visibility;
- relations status and wars with other leaders;
- and above all: victory – if one team member wins, the whole team wins.
Despite not collaborating on technical research, artistic progressions, or cultural traditions, the teams will preserve their unique identities as stated by Firaxix: “This is just the initial phase of teams in Civ VII. We encourage all multiplayer enthusiasts to share their feedback!
Remaining changes and improvements
Among the other new features, we will find:
- “Fix everything” – a new option in the production window, which will allow you to repair all damaged elements of the city with one click;
- fewer natural disasters – their frequency will be reduced at lower difficulty levels;
- coastal erosion – better planning of shoreline lines on selected types of maps;
- more interface and quality of life improvements – we will learn the details along with the full update notes.
What’s next?
In May, Firaxis Games plans to momentarily halt the release of new content, focusing instead on creating major updates slated for June.
DLC Right to Rule – not until summer
The planned release of the paid expansion pack, titled “Right to Rule“, which includes a total of six smaller downloadable content (DLC) packages, has been postponed until summer 2025. More details about what this collection will contain will be revealed as we approach its launch date.
