In Civilization 7, amassing resources will remain a crucial part of constructing your empire, as it has been since the early versions. However, the upcoming installment will bring significant modifications to this aspect. Diplomacy is set to undergo a transformation, and consequently, the trade system may lose one of Civilization 6’s key mechanics in Civilization 7.

Civ 7 takes resources out of diplomacy to simplify trade routes

In Civilization 7, diplomacy is set to focus more on major decisions and proposals rather than the intricate details as seen in Civ 6. Instead of exchanging specific resources with other civilizations like gold or artworks for necessities, the new game will likely involve broader trade agreements.

In Civilization VII, the detailed management of items within diplomacy has been completely eliminated. The most recent developer’s diary highlighted three main methods players can obtain resources:

  • Growth Event: When your Settlement expands due to population growth, selecting a tile with a resource on it automatically builds an Improvement that acquires that resource.
  • Trade Route: Sending a merchant Unit to a nearby Settlement will set up a Trade Route, giving you a copy of each of the resources produced locally there.
  • City States: A few City-States in each Age have a unique resource that can only be obtained by being their Suzerain.

In Civilization 6, one option remains the traditional approach of expanding your territories to capture valuable resources for personal use. However, an alternative strategy is available through the establishment of trading links to other settlements. Previously, trade routes didn’t influence resources directly but provided benefits such as Science, Culture, Faith, Gold, Food, or Production.

Now, with updates in the game, trade routes can yield copies of resources, or acquiring them becomes possible by assuming the role of a suzerain over City-States within your empire.

In a new approach, resources are divided into three distinct types: Empire Resources, primarily referring to what were previously termed ‘strategic’ resources like iron or horses; City Resources, which enhance Science, Culture, and Gold; and a combined category that encompasses aspects from the past in a more integrated manner.

In the upcoming version, Bonus Resources will be a blend of Civ 6’s bonus and luxury resources. These can be placed within settlements to gain advantages, similar to how luxury resources previously provided amenities to boost city happiness. However, we’ll only get to experience these changes when Civilization 7 is released. For now, it seems like an intriguing update that might help emphasize some of the game’s more captivating mechanics.
