Civ 7 First Look at Ashoka Reveals 2 Personas, 1 New Civlization

As a seasoned strategy game enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the latest Civilization 7 reveal has left me utterly thrilled! The introduction of Ashoka, both the World Renouncer and the World Conqueror, has added a fascinating layer to this epic franchise.

In the latest video preview, the ongoing unveiling of Civilization 7’s gameplay continues as it spotlights Ashoka. Although we had earlier learned that Ashoka would be part of Civilization 7, fresh details about two distinct personas have now been disclosed. The World Renouncer persona will connect to the previously unveiled Maurya India, but the intriguing mention of the World Conqueror persona hints at another civilization being added to the expanding Civilization 7 roster.

In Civilization 7, not all leaders will have multiple options, but several will offer two distinct personalities for players to pick from, each representing different stages of that leader’s timeline. For instance, Ashoka in the initial preview presents us with the choice between the Ascetic (World Renouncer) or the Warrior (World Conqueror) personas.

In the main game of Civilization 7, a renowned figure named Ashoka is included, however, the World Conqueror version of Ashoka is part of the Founders Content Pack DLC. Those who purchased the Founders Edition will already have access to this pack, but others will need to buy it separately. This Ashoka character is accessible to all players, embodying a time when he underwent deep enlightenment and propagated a philosophy of peace. Here are some crucial aspects of his leadership that players might encounter:

  • Playstyle: Diplomatic Expansionist
  • Historical Civ: Maurya (Antiquity Age)
  • Unique Ability: Dhammaraja (+1 Food in Cities for every 5 excess Happiness. +10% Food in all Settlements during a Celebration. All Buildings gain a +1 Happiness Adjacency for all Improvements.)

Ashoka, World Conqueror

A crucial aspect of Ashoka’s shift towards non-violence stood out due to his previous ruthlessness and military might as a World Conqueror. Here are some essential characteristics about this leader that players might encounter:

  • Playstyle: Diplomatic Militaristic
  • Historical Civ: Persia (Antiquity Age)
  • Unique Ability: Devaraja (+1 Production for every 5 excess Happiness in Cities. +10% Production in Settlements he did not found. +10 Combat Strength against Districts for all Units during a Celebration. Declaring Formal War grants a Celebration.)

In the video, it’s clear that Persia is identified as a civilization from ancient times, or Antiquity Age. We don’t have all the details yet, but there’s a hint that Persia might possess special military units which could be advantageous if Ashoka chooses a militaristic approach. At this point, it seems reasonable to assume the Persian Immortals are among those unique units, although we’ll need more information from Civilization 7 to confirm that.
