As a connoisseur of international cinema and espionage thrillers, I find myself utterly captivated by the trailer for “Citadel: Diana.” The life experiences of Matilda De Angelis, our protagonist, have clearly prepared her for this high-stakes role. From her gripping performances in “The Undoing” with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, to her portrayal of a character in the Ernest Hemingway adaptation “Across the River and Into the Trees,” De Angelis has proven time and again that she possesses the talent and tenacity required for this demanding role.
Amazon Studios has unveiled a thrilling sneak peek for their espionage series “Citadel: Diana,” featuring Matilda De Angelis (“The Undoing”) portraying Diana Cavalieri, a covert Citadel operative battling a dangerous criminal organization in a future Milan.
The six-part series, representing our most extensive Italian original production yet, is Italy’s addition to Amazon Prime Video’s elaborate “Citadel” series concept, premiered in April 2023. This show functions as a starting point for numerous shows set across various nations, all interconnected through their storylines and characters.
De Angelis, an emerging Italian talent, gained international recognition starring opposite Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in Susanne Bier’s “The Undoing.” She also worked with Liev Schrieber in the adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s “Across the River and Into the Trees,” directed by Paula Ortiz.
The story “Citadel: Diana” unfolds in Milan of 2030, eight years after the global spy agency known as Citadel was destroyed by Manticore, a covert world-manipulating syndicate. After this catastrophic event, Citadel agent Diana Cavalieri found herself ensnared within Manticore’s ranks, posing as a mole on their side.
To escape, one must rely on an unlikely partner – Edo Zani, the presumed successor of Manticore Italy and offspring of Ettore, a powerful figure in the Italian organization. However, he is currently challenging other European families for control within the sinister syndicate.
Apart from De Angelis, the Italian version of “Citadel” also features Lorenzo Cervasio as Edo Zani, Maurizio Lombardi portraying Ettore Zani, Thekla Reuten, Julia Piaton, Filippo Nigro, and Bernhard Schütz in their respective roles.
“Citadel Diana,” as previously announced, will launch globally on Prime Video Oct. 10.
The television series is manufactured by Cattleya, a Rome-based production company renowned for “Gomorrah,” and it’s jointly overseen by ITV Studios, Amazon MGM Studios, and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. Gina Gardini, known for her work on “Gomorrah” and “ZeroZeroZero,” is serving as the showrunner.
The series titled “Citadel: Diana” is helmed by director Arnaldo Catinari and masterminded by Alessandro Fabbri, who also serves as the show’s lead writer. Alongside Fabbri, Ilaria Bernardini, Gianluca Bernardini, Laura Colella, and Giordana Mari collaborated on writing the series.
