As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinema-going experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that the advent of HDR by Barco is a game-changer for the silver screen. Having witnessed the evolution of film technology from black and white to color, 3D, and IMAX, I am genuinely excited about this latest innovation.
The first cinema equipped with Barco HDR technology outside the United States will officially open on November 15 at Cineworld Leicester Square, London, during the premiere of “Gladiator II” from Paramount Pictures.
When “Gladiator II” premieres on November 22 in the U.S., it will simultaneously screen in five American cinemas that have already been fitted with HDR by Barco, as part of an initial trial for their advanced HDR-compatible projection system. Specifically at Cineworld Leicester Square, this innovative HDR technology by Barco will be available in the Superscreen auditorium, which is also undergoing installation of a new Harkness Hugo Screen.
Javier Sotomayor, president of Cineworld International, announced our delight in extending our collaboration with Barco. We’re bringing their groundbreaking HDR technology to our Superscreen at Cineworld Leicester Square. Being the initial venue outside of the U.S. to showcase this advanced format, we can’t wait to provide London movie-goers an upgraded, brighter, and intensely immersive cinema experience, debuting with the epic ‘Gladiator II.’
Gerwin Damberg, Barco’s executive vice president of cinema, stated that Cineworld Leicester Square is a renowned and iconic London theater, thus an ideal initial international location for HDR by Barco. We appreciate Paramount Pictures’ ongoing partnership; ‘Gladiator II’, being a grand spectacle, beautifully showcases in Barco’s HDR on the large screen, translating the creative vision of filmmakers into reality.
Gladiator II” is the sixth title added to the HDR pilot program by Barco, joining forces with Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment’s “Transformers One,” Paramount’s “Smile 2,” Dreamworks Animation and Universal’s “The Wild Robot,” Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Duo Delirium” and Amazon MGM Studio’s “Red One.” (This version maintains the sequence and order of the original sentence, but uses more common and easy-to-understand language.)
Through partnerships with AMC Theatres, B&B Theatres, and Regal Cinemas, HDR by Barco is now accessible in various locations across the U.S. Specifically, you can find it at AMC Americana at Brand 18 in Glendale, California, AMC Barrywoods 24 in Kansas City, Missouri, B&B Theatres Red Oak 12 in Dallas, Texas, Regal Dania Pointe in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Regal Times Square in New York City.
The pilot program for this innovative laser projector system is set to run until the end of the year, before Barco officially launches it commercially in 2025. This cutting-edge technology utilizes Barco’s exclusive “light steering” mechanism, enabling the projector to adjust light distribution dynamically. In simpler terms, this feature enhances movies by expanding the contrast range between the brightest parts in daytime scenes and the darkest tones in low-light settings.
