After a short break caused by the impact of Hollywood’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, along with concerns about the stability of Italy’s tax incentives for international film productions, Rome’s Cinecittà Studios are bustling with activity once more.
The key point from a press conference hosted by Cinecittà CEO Manuela Cacciamani, held recently in Rome, is that she’s executing a strategic plan for the years 2025-2029. This plan aims to bring in approximately €60 million ($67 million) in revenue and achieve a modest but impactful profit of around €4.3 million ($4.8 million) by 2029.
As a passionate movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that the legendary film studios are undergoing a significant transformation, boosted by a generous €300 million ($338 million) loan from the European Union’s post-pandemic recovery fund. This revitalization has attracted none other than Mel Gibson, who is scheduled to shoot “The Resurrection of the Christ” at Cinecittà’s expansive new Studio 22 facility in August.
Moreover, Ridley Scott has chosen Cinecittà’s historic Studio 5, once a cherished second home for the legendary Federico Fellini, as his base to film his post-apocalyptic thriller “The Dog Stars”.
Adding to the excitement, Disney, Universal, and Fox Nation are planning to start production on major, yet undisclosed projects within the studio lot soon. Cacciamani’s announcement has certainly ignited a spark of anticipation in the film industry!
She noted that the studios have now reached full occupancy for the fourth quarter of this year.
The head of Cinecittà emphasized the importance of securing U.S. and worldwide clients to film at the studios, but she also highlighted her efforts in drawing in more domestic Italian productions. “From my experience with actor and screenwriter strikes, studio fires, and tariffs, I’ve learned that relying solely on international cinema isn’t sufficient,” Cacciamani stated, explaining that increasing the number of Italian films is a key focus for her.
The primary attraction for bringing overseas film productions is a mix of the nation’s tax benefits and the ongoing transformation of Cinecittà into a massive, cutting-edge digital era studio facility.
In the renovation, the number of soundstages at Cinecittà is increasing from 19 to 24. This includes the new Studio 22, which spans over 38,000 square feet, and Studio 18, known for housing Europe’s largest and most advanced LED wall. Filming on the U.S. sci-fi thriller “White Mars,” starring Luke Newton (“Bridgerton”) and Lucy Hale (“Pretty Little Liars”), recently concluded at this virtual stage, as it was filmed entirely using this state-of-the-art LED wall.
Regarding the Italian tax credits for films, Nicola Borrelli, head of the film department at Italy’s culture ministry, spoke during a recent gathering in Cannes, organized by EbMaster, and assured attendees that incentives for international productions are now active again after some brief confusion. The government had been considering changes, but those have since been put on hold. Borrelli also outlined the details of Italy’s 40% rebate for foreign film and television productions. He stated that each company in Italy can claim up to €20 million euros ($22 million) per year, but there is no limit per project. This means that larger-budget international projects have been able to take advantage of the rebate by splitting their production across multiple companies, according to Borrelli.
In her speech in Rome, Cacciamani additionally emphasized the renowned skill of Cinecittà’s artists and artisans, who played a crucial role in constructing the Vatican set for the Academy Award-winning film “Conclave,” as an additional strong attraction point.
Cacciamani stated, ‘We’re not simply constructing new film studios; we’re revolutionizing the concept of European cinema.’ She further explained, ‘Cinecittà is transforming into a multifaceted powerhouse that operates at its best every day, maintaining an exceptional standard of quality.’ The studio chief in Rome emphasized that ‘our outstanding services, skilled crews, and artisans are what truly distinguish us from our competitors.’
