Actor Cillian Murphy is set to rejoin the “28 Days Later” series, but fans will have to be patient as his return has been delayed. In recent conversations with Business Insider and IGN, director Danny Boyle revealed that Murphy, who played a key role in the 2002 original film, won’t be seen in the upcoming movie titled “28 Years Later.” However, he will make an appearance in the final scene of its 2026 sequel, “The Bone Temple.
“He is in the second one,” Boyle told IGN. “I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed.”
The original concept for “28 Years Later” by Boyle and writer Alex Garland was to launch a brand new trilogy. This revamped franchise, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, simultaneously filmed its sequel, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta. The final film of the trilogy is still in development and may receive funding if “28 Years Later” proves successful at the box office. Boyle aims to bring Danny Murphy into the project following his best actor Oscar win for “Oppenheimer,” hoping this could help secure financing for the concluding chapter of the trilogy.
Boyle mentioned to Business Insider that all we can do is wait for Cillian, as he may assist in securing financing for the third film. To IGN, Boyle explained that each story in the trilogy concludes on its own, but there’s also a transition segment leading into the next movie. This makes it quite ambitious. At the moment, we don’t have the funds for the third installment yet. The success of the first film will likely determine whether we receive approval for financing and production of the third one. Everyone is eagerly anticipating this, including Cillian.
As a cinephile, I can tell you that convincing Cillian Murphy to join the trilogy was a game-changer for me. You see, having him on board helped ease any technical worries during discussions about filming “28 Years Later” with iPhones. It’s like this: if they get Cillian Murphy, all their concerns just sort of vanish. We cleverly leveraged that advantage to get our way. After all, what greater assurance could you ask for than the promise of Cillian Murphy?
28 Days Later, Boyle’s initial film, marked one of Murphy’s early breakout roles in blockbuster cinema. He starred as Jim, a character who regains consciousness in a hospital to find out that the United Kingdom has been plunged into chaos due to a zombie apocalypse. Some fans have hypothesized that Murphy might reprise his role in the franchise, with some going so far as to think that the zombie seen in the trailer for “28 Years Later” was portrayed by the actor. However, it was actually Angus Neill, an art dealer new to acting, who played the part.
As a cinephile eagerly scanning the horizon of upcoming cinematic adventures, I’m thrilled to share that my highly anticipated follow-up, “28 Years Later,” graces our screens on June 20, 2023, courtesy of Sony Pictures. Fasten your seatbelts for a chilling journey, as we delve deeper into the haunting world of “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” on January 16, 2026.
