CIA Used Star Wars Fan Site to Secretly Communicate with Spies, Report Reveals

It’s said that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency allegedly communicated with spies globally through a platform modeled after the popular Star Wars franchise.

404Media reports that an independent security analyst named Ciro Santilli uncovered a set of websites created by the CIA for secretive communication with their foreign assets, according to his findings.

The design of one site was reminiscent of a Star Wars enthusiast’s haven, adorned with cartoon depictions of Yoda and C-3PO, accompanied by ads for video games from the Xbox and Wii era, as well as Lego sets showcasing items from the series.

It was shut down, however, after it was discovered by the Iranian authorities over a decade ago.

When questioned about his reason for delving into the CIA’s network of sites, he responded that it stemmed from his fascination with Chinese politics, his fondness for television versions of espionage novels, and a desire to counteract the CIA for spying on fellow democracies.

In my exploration, I stumbled upon more than just the Star Wars fan site. As per the publication, I unearthed a comedian’s fan hub, another dedicated to extreme sports, and a third focusing on Brazilian music. Interestingly, some of these sites seemed tailored to Germany, France, Spain, and even Brazil, based on their language and content.

Ciro Santilli stated that this information provides a wider perspective on the CIA’s focus areas during that period. It discloses additional democracies possibly under their scrutiny which were not known before, and also offers a quantitative analysis of the significance they assigned to various regions at the time. Notably, it shows that the Middle East held the greatest importance for them.

The website is no longer active, and when you visit the URL, it just sends you to the CIA website.
