Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to Be the First Movie Shot Entirely With Imax Cameras

Known for creating grandiose blockbusters, Christopher Nolan is set to outdo himself with his upcoming film “The Odyssey”. Unlike his previous works, this movie will be the first ever filmed entirely using Imax cameras. Currently in production, “The Odyssey” boasts an impressive cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway and others.

Ever since 2008, when “The Dark Knight” marked the debut of Hollywood films using Imax cameras for specific action sequences, Nolan has been gradually working towards creating a full-length feature film entirely with these cameras. With each new release, he’s incorporated Imax footage more extensively. His latest film, “Oppenheimer,” which won an Oscar in 2023, was the first to employ Imax black-and-white 65mm film.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the epic saga “The Odyssey” is being brought to life by the extraordinary cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who has previously worked with the visionary Christopher Nolan on masterpieces like “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk,” “Tenet,” and the upcoming “Oppenheimer.” Notably, he was honored with an Oscar for Best Cinematography for his work on “Oppenheimer.” In an exclusive interview with EbMaster, he discussed his collaboration with Nolan and Kodak to develop the first Imax 65mm black-and-white film stock.

In a different wording, Hoytema stated that since 65 millimeters don’t offer black and white film, our initial hurdle was discussing with Kodak about the possibility of providing us with the appropriate film stock for this project. Additionally, we had to modify the cameras because those specific cameras have metal pressure plates behind the film gates, which are problematic when using thinner backing for black and white film. This could cause light to seep back into the film, resulting in various unwanted artifacts.

Nolan, having reworked Homer’s epic “The Odyssey”, is set to collaborate again with Universal Pictures for its upcoming release. Earlier this year at Cinema Con, Jim Orr, the studio’s head of distribution, forecasted that “The Odyssey” will be an awe-inspiring, extraordinary cinematic achievement of its time – a piece that might even elicit approval from Homer himself.

“The Odyssey” is set for release in theaters on July 27, 2026.
