Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is a ‘Masterpiece That Homer Himself Would Likely Be Proud Of,’ Universal Executive Declares

Universal looked back across time to generate excitement for Christopher Nolan‘s grand adaptation of “The Odyssey” during CinemaCon on Wednesday.

Jim Orr, head of our studio’s distribution department, believes the movie, currently in production, will be a groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind cinematographic marvel that even legendary storyteller Homer might admire.

It appeared he was serious, yet the crowd of theater owners, along with a few classic scholars, chuckled at the exaggeration. Additionally, Orr mentioned Nolan’s “overwhelmingly talented cast.” This statement didn’t seem to be contested given that Nolan, buoyed by the Oscar-winning triumph of “Oppenheimer,” has gathered a team including Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, along with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. No details have been revealed regarding which mythical characters they will portray.

Universal hasn’t released any footage or previews for Christopher Nolan’s latest production, nor have they given us a sneak peek into Steven Spielberg’s upcoming blockbuster. The latter is venturing back into action-packed films following his semi-autobiographical project “The Fabelmans,” which doesn’t yet have a definitive title. However, it does feature a script penned by David Koepp, who collaborated with Spielberg on “Jurassic Park.” Universal has labeled the project as a “new original event film,” but plot details remain under wraps. The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Spielberg and is rumored to incorporate science fiction elements. The cast includes Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson.

At CinemaCon, Orr described the film as fast-paced and contemporary with an unexpected twist from beyond our world. This certainly aligns with Spielberg’s style, known for blockbusters like “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Spielberg’s upcoming movie premieres on June 12, 2026, while Nolan’s film is set to debut in theaters on July 17, 2026.
